I put over 100 track days on each of my E46 and E92 with very little mods (tires, brake pads and camber plates). I'd say they are good for more than the "occasional" track day .

I am not so sure, at least based on feedback I got from my track buddies that own(ed) 911T.

Besides, that GT2 would be the turbo track 911 .

My point is about design intent though. Sure the 911T is quite capable on a track. However, its main design purpose is being a GT.

The main design intent of the M3(4) (at least how I have understood it since the launch of the first M3 in 1986), is to be a dual purpose car, practical DD and track. Compromises are made on the M3(4) to improve it's track performance at the expense of its street-ability, and I am perfectly happy with that.

The thing is that the popularity of the M3 keeps increasing and a smaller proportion of M3s are seeing the track. With the customer demographics evolving with the increased market share, I just hope that BMW will maintain that original design intent with the next generation.

I suspect once the F80 gets older and more used/cheap purchase cost ones get into the hands of track enthusiasts we will see a lot more at the track, similar to how there seem to be many more E36 and E46 M3 than E9X M3 right now

Agreed on the 911 TT. Feedback from friends with 996TT is there is ~$3k in prep needed to do things like pin coolant lines to make sure the car is reliable for track use

That's not to say the F8x is not the most track capable model yet, it is for sure, it is the most recent(even brand new Camrys performs better then old Corvettes as you can see in the latest Carlos Lago video ) but it has lost some rawness to it(most specificly talking about engine and steering) like every new generation that comes out. That's why before I thought of the M3 as being cheap replacement for a 911S and now I see it more as a replacement of a 911TT.
Being most "track ready" or "track capable" does not only mean being faster in my book. It also means having to ability to sustain the abuse imposed by track use. I am not sure even a modern Camry would sustain the abuse of track use, despite it being faster than the older ones. And, IMO, in that respect, the F8X seems to be the most track ready M3 ever.

As I have posted in my previous reviews of my M4, BMW has been able to make it both a better daily driver as well as making it a better track car than the previous model. They were able to expand on both extremes of its dual purpose design intent. Which is quite a feat IMO.

I just posted that I did not need to make any mods (besides tire and pads) to both my E46 and E92 to make them reliable track cars.

Fuel economy and daily capability in the name of selling more cars to more people as been the deciding factor of many key element of this new car, that would have probably not been the case if BMW, like Porsche, had a different M3 for every type of costumer. Cars like GT3s, GT350Rs and Z06s don't have to make these compromise, they just build them so the enthousiast can have the most fun at the track. I know you're not saying the M3 is like a GT3, but to me it has much more became like a 911TT then anything else in the porsche line-up, which is not a bad thing by any means. That's just my opinion, no one has to think like me.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree
