My car is presently in at the dealers (UK) with a chassis malfunction fault which keeps coming up. When it does, the first thing you can notice is suspension goes to a very firm setting, steering becomes heavier, rearview cam doesn't work. Its also impossible to switch or adjust the steering settings or suspension settings. Checking through fault codes its saying something like an EDC short circuit. Anyway, I dropped the car off yesterday morning, by lunchtime I had a short video message showing me the problem. One half of the fuse box isn't powering up. They've ordered a new fuse box as its a complete unit, and it will be fitted today. Personally i'm not convinced its the fuse box but who knows. Funny they found the fault so fast and also had one for delivery next day. Seems suspicious, as if this may be a common issue???

Anyway, I did get a loaner brand new M5 for the day yesterday but had to return it as it was a sales demo. They gave me another M4 until my car is fixed. They also tried to get me to part exchange into an M4 CS.

I'll let you know what the result is.

ps, the M5 is an absolutely awesome machine. The engine is so powerful and smooth, car is super quiet compared to the M4, it handles like its on rails with the 4wd system. Pity they cant transplant the M5 drivetrain and engine into an M4. The M5 is a boring looking car but probably one of, if not THE best car i've ever driven, from a drivers perspective.

Error Code Fixed by Replacing EDC Sensor and Cable - DIY

Hey guys,

I just had this issue and with the help from this thread and others, was luckily able to fix it and make the error code go away. For those of us out of warranty it was about an hour DIY and $155 in parts, pretty easy to do once you jack up the side enough to take the wheel off.

The car is non-ZCP 6spd with EDC and has 47,000 miles on it and all of a sudden it started throwing the Chassis Malfunction error, turning the suspension ultra-firm and not allowing Sport settings. I used my Bootmod3 app to diagnose the system and got this code:

Vertical Dynamics Control (Suspension) VDC1
482941 Rad acceleration sensor - front left - sensor 1 - below threshold

In reading some other posts it seemed like a good idea to spend a few bucks to also replace the cable, so I found BMW Northwest as the cheapest online -

Part numbers:

37156871465 Accelerating sensor (same part for both left and right)
31307850609 Cable, wheel acceleration sensor

https://parts.bmwnorthwest.com/p/BMW...156871465.html

https://parts.bmwnorthwest.com/p/BMW...307850609.html

Install:
Take front wheel off, take cover off the front inner wheel well, unhook the old cable and install the new one, unscrew the old sensor and install new one (one screw), reverse the above. Again it took only an hour or so. I live in an apartment with no garage or tools so I found a local DIY garage with all the tools for $40 per hour and it was a lot of fun!

I attached some pictures but it's pretty straightforward. Have been driving around for a couple days now with no error, where before it would throw the error every time I turned on the car. Cheers!

I assume you being quiet means the issue has not come back? Thanks for writing this all up

have the same problem since a few days
but in my case it is the rear left wheel
i can't find a acceleration sensor for the rear axle
only the front axle has an acceleration sensor

Vertical Dynamics Control (Suspension) VDC1
482948 Rad acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - above threshold
482949 Rad acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - below threshold
48294B Rad acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - value implausibly
482969 Rad acceleration sensor - rear left - sensor 3 - supply undervoltage

it happened in december first time, on a rainy day, appeared a few days and than it was gone
but this week it was rainy again and the warning pops up again

should it be enough to change the acceleration sensor cable with the part number 31307850599? or do I need the acceleration sensor too? where can I find it for the rear?

thanks a lot

I'm having the same problem... the dealer replaced the accelerating sensor BM37-15-6-871-465 and it seemed to fix the issue. Prior to this it was constant... I now only get the error when backing up and turning all the way (locked) to the right.

I am scheduled to take back in today... I hope they don't blame the H&R suspension.

mindcontrollerone Any update on your return to the dealer? I just had the code for the first time. H&R suspension as well and reversing full locked turn to the right.

bump.

can anyone confirm that replacing the EDC sensor and cable solves the “482941 - Rad Acceleration Sensor - below threshold” code?

i’ve been getting this code every day and it’s irritating that my suspension goes to straight Sport+ mode on these NYC roads.

I just replaced my front left rad acc sensor too and its still throwing the chassis malfunction. I installed the part, did I have to do anything else? like disconnect the battery and reconnect. Or use bootmod3 to clear it?

thanks to shiftmr2t and his post, i replaced both the cable and the sensor and went for a quick test drive last night and this morning. it completely solved the code that i was getting. i always get the same code + chassis malfunction issue in the same spot of road and it hasnt appeared since. so happy that it worked and finally get to enjoy comfort mode on my EDC again. the job was stupid simple and took me 30 mins to complete.

was the code for that exact same location (482941?). before starting the car i did clear the code off the car (with bootmod3). other then that, I haven’t done anything else. no need to disconnect battery or anything.

I did start the car without clearing it. But I used boot mod 3 and returned everything to stock and cleared all codes. Same code comes up...

as per shiftmr2t , i did the cable as well, which might be the reason why you are still getting the error.

I've just ordered the two parts the OP mentions above as my intermittent chassis warning fault which tendered to clear now doesn't ( I'm getting 482A22 value spool front left open line and 482A30 value coil front left current controller plausibility error ) - googling these seems to suggest this sensor is the culprit.

Do you have to remove the wheel lining to replace the cable - I'll try and sensor first of all and replace the cable if needs be shiftmr2t

Yes you have to remove the wheel lining...pretty easy to do.

Let me know if it fixes your Valve coil error as I got the same one thats intermittent.

Bah I'm getting the same error codes randomly these days.

The only difference is that I have the bilstein b16 damptronic adaptive suspension instead of the stock EDC. I'm thinking that this error may not be related to the suspension, but some electronic gremlin.

Hopefully I can take it to EAS next week to get diagnosed and repaired. It's quite annoying that I have to pull over to restart my car for it to go back to normal.

I've replaced the acceleration sensor today and cleared the codes but no joy - the cable hasn't arrived yet so I'll replace that as well when it turns up. After that any other thoughts on what this could be?

Also running Bilstein B16 damptronic setup.

Hey Steve, sorry to hear. Another thing you can try is reseating the EDC cables from the car to the shocks. My issues seems resolved for now and all I did was unplug and replug the cables that went into the shock as well as the sensors. I asked Bilstein about this issue as I have the B16 shocks and they wrote: "With issues like this we do always recommend to check the shock wiring and connectors for any issues. You will want to make sure all connectors are seated and none of the wiring is loose or damaged."

Hope that helps and please keep us updated!

Which ones did you check on the shocks themselves? I'm going to look at the cable that sits at the top of the shock (no 1 on diagram).

IF youre looking at top of the engine bay and then at the shock, you will see a wire come out of there. Since you have the B16 just like mine, you will see a black wire (kinda shiny) with a bluish plug. That's the one.
