New Diff new oil?
So I got a new diff a few thousand miles ago. Dealership never told me I would need a flush after but another dealership said I should.
What's your input? |

I had my diff replaced under warranty. The fluid change IS covered as well. The work sheet had notes to do the 1200 mile break in and fluid change as well

Honestly, your service advisor doesn't know anything about your car or the required maintenance. The car never calls for dif fluid nor would it know that the dif was replaced as this is not a normal thing. When a dif, engine, etc is replaced with a new unit then it should be run-in and maintained the same way it was initially when the car itself was brand new. Its really common sense and that response from your service advisor shows that he doesn't really understand cars (not surprised) nor did he take the time to research and ask someone more knowledgable like the shop foreman.

You might be right. Many years ago I had a motor replaced and they did a complimentary oil change after 1200 miles. This shouldn't be any different. I'll ask for the foreman this time.

I think the diff oil replacement at 1200 was only for DCT cars if memory serves me right. In case anyone has a 6mt; I recall when I asked SA they had said F8X manual cars don't require diff oil change at 1200 mile service.

My service advisor gave me the same stupid run around. I eventually got BMW NA involved and forced them to talk to the dealership and they covered the flush. I ended up paying myself out of pocket to get it done at the right mileage something like $140 and got reimbursed.

Incorrect. The diff is the same regardless of transmission. The fluid is changed in both cars during 1200 break-in service. If an SA told you this they are blatantly wrong.

You're right, I believe it was the trans fluid then. I will look at my service forms when I get a chance, my 1200 mile service was done in december of 2015, been awhile.

DCT fluid isn't changed, only rear diff.

I recall the diff flush was part of the 1200 mile service for a long while, then removed, then back and forth, people demanded it, some paid for it out of pocket. Whether or not it was included at 1200 miles also varied regionally. No idea what the official BMW policy is now. Seems like a good idea to do it either way.

I changed my diff fluid along with brake and engine oil at last service! I'm glad I did.
