The HUD reads the same speed as the gauge cluster.

The speedo is optimistic, but not by such a wide margin.

There is a magazine that GPS measured the M4 top speed at 163mph with a speedo indicated 167mph. Car and Driver also GPS measured the M3 and M4 top speed at 163mph.

Geez you guys have a lot of faith in rubber and some lug bolts lol. I'm always afraid of them just flying off as I go careening under an 18-wheeler to my death.

I hit 150mph on a closed track though in a pretty heavily modified F80 and that was the fastest I felt comfortable with.

That's why I got a vert and drive top down: If you get into trouble you just pull your chute and grab the nearest cable car to the bottom. Outa sight, outa mind is what I say.

130 and it felt like 80.

this thing at 100 feels like 65 to me..

I would love to have somewhere where I could get it up to 160 though

Hear, hear, as it should be done (unless you're in Germany).

Far too many claims of hitting the limiter on open public roads. The NJ Turnpike post above made me shudder as I drive that quite often. I'm no angel with speeding (it's far too easy to get up there, and my exposure to 150+ speeds in Germany, it's hard to let the foot up), but hitting the limiter on roads like that are insane.

Only ever stretched her legs in Germany on the autobahn and the Nurburgring., and never hit the limiter.

My wife and I joke that she actually took it faster than me because we both saw her speed on the autobahn as she closed in on 140mph... whereas while I was on the ring, there was never much time to be looking at the speedometer while in traffic. We know it was 125+, but definitely never hit the limiter. I highly doubt I'll push it like that again here to get close to the limiter unless I am on a closed track.

Ha Ha... i envy you US guys for your great aftermarket parts and wonderful landscapes in the states. But when it comes to speeding you're far away from "land of the free" as every country except good old Krautland ... Last year i was at 295 km/h (roundabout 180 Miles) and it was pure curiosity how that feels. Until then i was only co-pilot when a friend of mine goes 330 km/h with a Porsche 911 Turbo tuned by Ruf...completely crazy, my hands felt sweaty.

Driving that fast is really demanding and a bit scary ...Sometimes it's nice to push the throttle but honestly i prefer a top speed of roundabout 120-130 Miles as there are too many idi... äh guys out there that haven't grasped yet what the purpose of a rear view mirror is...

Finally i enjoy the car much more on roads with nice turns where top speed is a relative figure. So don't be too sad with your speeding limits...

I hit 136mph on a empty Socal fwy at around 3am one Sat night. It was somewhat downhill so it helped get to that speed quickly. But i got scared cuz the steering was getting really really rough. I blame it on my 20's. When i got home i can smell the rubber and metals ... And feel the heat from my wheels. Got a couple of nicks on my front splitters. In hindsight, what was i thinking going that fast on wheels not meant for speed?!?! I dont think i will ever do that again. Lol.

Me too, only on the Autobahn. I "pegged" the limiter too, but I noticed it as more of a fuel cutoff than a two-step style bounce. The thing feels pretty damn stable at that insane speed

I would even say it is throttle governing. It is very smooth riding the governor, the car just sails at the limited top speed .

Yup, on my autobahn cruises I settle in at about 125mph. The interesting thing is, on one 8 hour cruise there was a porsche and an AMG that would come roaring up behind me, I'd move over and they'd fly by. Then 45 minutes later I'd pass them and notice one or the other was on a cell phone. Then they'd come roaring up again. This happened for 4 hours but the 3 of us headed into downtown Hamburg 1,2,3.

Strange.

Thats just because you live in Virginia, lol. I hear you go to jail for going more than 80mph there which is hilarious to me. Here in Pittsburgh, local cops arent allowed to use radar/lidar detectors. Only state troopers can use Lidar. This is pretty much the only thing making me stay here

Fresh strip of perfectly straight blacktop in the isolated SoCal desert. 166 indicated when the limiter kicked in. It was still pulling decently at that speed.

141 is my max.

Texas World Speedway may be an old and run down track, but all of you out-of-staters would be doing yourself a favor by making it down before they shut it for good. A really, really fun place to spend a weekend with your car.

I should have noted that too. It's definitely a limiter, as the car was still pulling hard at the 166 indicated when it kicked in.

Its the BMW lap timer. A great app, cant recommend it enough. It knows the track you are on and stores data like throttle response, brakes, etc and will let you replay your laps via the google map reader built it.

So after running a session, you can go back and review each turn, each input, each mistake to fix it the next time you go out. It's free, but its the best BMW app I own by a mile.
