Am I an idiot?!?
I pulled the trigger on an '18 M3 from across the country. Site unseen, other than the pictures from the dealership's listing and a few more from the sales guy. I'm in Ohio and the car was in Oregon. Decent price but I did it because I'm turning in my current lease very soon and really wanted a specific set of colors/packages on an '18 M3 (black/black, Comp, Exec) and the DCT (wife can't drive manual; in case of emergencies). Based on what I could find/read the car checks out: low miles (~17k), 16 months of factory warranty, clean CarFax, regular maintenance, very clean (at least via photos). It arrives Sunday via dealership-arranged shipping. I'm planning to take it to my local BMW specialty shop on Monday for a post purchase inspection (I think that's an oxymoron) but wanted to ask you folks if there's anything specific to this model I should look for or check out upon receipt? Will be my first ///M but 8th BMW (E28, E34, E28, E36, E46, E90, F36, F80). Yes, I'm an addict. |

Well at least you got it from a dealer.
Should have better protections than a private party. Not sure if it was a BMW dealer you purchased it from but could have done a PPI prior to purchase. Other than that, this chassis is pretty solid. No major things to watch for other than the crank hub issue, charge pipe, and charge cooler you’ll read about. If you don’t tune, you’ll be safer on BMW factory warranty coverage etc. Enjoy the car and load pictures of the delivery day and resultant vehicle. Do a thorough inspection of the vehicle when being unloaded. This is my 16th BMW. Welcome to the club... the addiction is real. |

If buying from a BMW dealer, ask them to scan the DME and see if it is flagged as a tuned car. If it comes back negative, that's about it (at least for me) for what you have to worry about because an 18 will still be under warranty.

Should have shared that I got it from a BMW dealership, and it was the same dealership that sold the car when new (and did all the service).
Thanks for the heads up re: the potential issues. Will do that scan at my local shop and see what comes up. |

You literally described my purchase 4 months ago. Everything turned out great for me and the only issues the car had were three rock chips in the paint, all smaller than a bread crumb. May the delivery Gods treat you just as well! In hindsight I should have done a PPI and paid for enclosed delivery but it all turned out beautifully. Best of luck to you.

thats what i do.
finding the perfect car is better than finding one thats "just ok" local to you. you gotta look at your car everyday and be happy with it after all

Did this 3 years ago. Live in CA purchase in NC. Got videos and detailed photos. Talked to the GM and got comfortable with them.
Didn't ship it. Decided to fly there and drive it home. One of the best road trips ever going through several states and mountain roads, including tail of the dragon. Just give the car a quick look over...maybe give her a wash (I tend to find things when washing my car and cleaning the interior). Other than that just enjoy the car as is and take a nice long drive. |

Update!
She's here! Would've flown out and driven her back from Oregon but we have a 3-week old baby and the wife would not have appreciated it... I was lucky to get approval for the M3 😉
Car arrived this morning. Everything checks out, visually, and for the first drive. Have an inspection setup tomorrow for reassurance but she looks pretty damn clean and drives perfectly. Man, these machines are incredible! Looking forward to many more wonderful threads here. Cheers! |

Congrats. I’d check out the rear quarter panel. Looks to be a dent. Also rear wheel is about 5 PSi off... 🤣
Congrats on both new kids. |

I *think* that's a funky reflection... I spent 3-4 hours washing it today and didn't notice it. Will take a closer look in the morning!

M3 is perfect family car. Enjoy. I remember when my youngest was that age.. he was my ride along for many years to drive events, car meets etc. He now has his own highly modified 335... suggest you start BMW specific savings account now lol. |

For what it's worth, that rear tire was off by 2 PSI, so pretty good eye 😉 [yes, I know that was a joke, too] Very exited to have it. It's been great so far. Looking forward to many more years with him as my copilot! |

As long as you know what you are getting into, its usually a safe bet to buy a dealer option car. I bought mine from a certified BMW reseller in phoenix, AZ, I'm in Pittsburgh. I flew out to do the paper work and have a fun weekend though. But put down the deposit and started papaerwork before I got there.
I don tthink I've ever bought a local car. Always southern/sunny place. |
