Exclamation Carbon Fiber Roof Peeling on 2015 M3

This is what my 2015 M3's carbon fiber roof looks like. It started peeling at around the 3.5 year mark. I have taken it to multiple BMW service centers but BMW refuses to fix it even though it was under warranty. They say the reason for the peeling is rocks hitting the car even thought it is peeling in the middle and the back of the roof. For the first 3 years I drove the same road and if there rocks hitting the roof why didn't it start peeling sooner.

Has anyone had similar issues with the CB roof?

I should have ordered with the sunroof.

Called BMW Service Manager and General Manager multiple times. Neither one will call me back to tell me this is not a factory defect because they know if it is. Be careful if you are buying a new one.

Definitely not rocks causing that. Is it possible something corrosive spilled on it since it appears the carbon fiber is delaminating?

Take it to a high quality body shop and have them wet sand and add 5 coats of clearcoat put on it. My buddy just had the same problem on his E92 M3. Dealer isn't helping anyone on this. Since its not common they will tell you it hasn't been cared for or unsual exposure.

That is pretty bad. Thanks for sharing. Do you park outside or the garage?

Do you regularly wax or have any kind of UV protection applied? This looks like what CF parts look like when it has no UV protection after years of sun exposure. It even looks yellowed from the pics.

WTF??!! How could they not fix that under warranty?

I don't think if seen any other M3/M4 have this issue. Was there any body work ever done to the car or coating added to the roof? It does look yellow from the pics.

I do have the vehicle professionally cleaned and waxed ever 4 months or so. The yellowing is because the water has gotten underneath the clear coat. Was waiting on BMW to respond but will now take it in for a new clear coat.

assuming your detailer uses quality sealants/waxes (and not crappy spray waxes that last a few days) this is quite an unfortunate predicament you are in. Sorry to hear this man. Have you contacted BMW NA? Your OP wasn't clear if you've only contacted dealerships or also reached out to BMW NA

Wow, wtf is that?! It should already have UV protectant in the clear/resin. The dealer should replace that under warranty. Crazy...

Guys, This is normal will any carbon fiber products. You will need a shop to air blast and put new clear coat on it.

Thanks,

I have contacted BMW USA and they told me a manager would be calling me back which never happened. Called them again and did not hear back. I've been to 2 separate BMW service departments and collision centers and no one wants to get involved. Real disappointment considering I've a customer for over 12 years.

Not really. This started off as a small peel a kept on growing with rain and the wind. I was waiting on BMW but since they are not responding I will pay for a new clear coat.

I find that I have to clay bar my roof constantly because it gets rough from contaminants, which tells me the clear coat isn't as good as the paint, and thus the UV protection is probably not as good either. Years out in the Florida sun is probably the root cause.

I will be jet sealing my roof monthly after seeing this thread.

Just as an update, I just got a quote from a reputable body shop company for $1300. Even the body shop manager was shocked that BMW will not cover this damage. He says the film is clearly faded and should not be peeling the way it is.
