OPF can sound good! Grail Automotive 3" OPF-back exhaust
There is hope for us Europeans after all.
I just mounted the Grail Automotive 3" exhaust on my F82 M4 Heritage Edition. Here's a short video clip of the car as it sounds now Cold start with flaps open Short tunnel rip with flaps open Video was taken with a warm engine, in the middle of December. Car was in Sport Plus, with the exhaust flaps manually set to open (via BimmerLink). My car is a March 2020 build and was one of the last F82 cars produced. As such, ISTEP and other relevant software revisions are as new as they come, in addition to the DME being super-locked. The only modification is the exhaust system, Downpipes, OPF and Software (DME) are 100% original. This is the loudest LEGAL exhaust option we have for the OPF cars. The beuaty of the Grail system is that with flaps closed, the car is even quieter than stock, but with open flaps all hell breaks loose. Essentially, with open flaps you have a straight pipe from the OPF back, as the center silencer is completely removed. The exhaust is hand made in Germany from Stainless steel and I went with the matte black 102mm tips. I am not 100% happy with the fit, sometimes when the car is cold, the exhaust vibrates slightly against the rear diff. I will probably remove the exhaust again and try to get a better fit. So far though, I am extremely happy with the way the car sounds. Classic S55 sound, with some of the extreme metallic rasp taken off due to the OPF. Overall, my car sounds a lot more bassy than regular non-OPF S55 cars. For any questions, feel free to ask ![]() BTW: pops&bangs are quite obnoxious now, to the point where I almost feel embarrassed driving around in Sport+. It is quite good fun in tunnels however. ![]()

Would love to, however midpipes are illegal in good ole Europe.

So who makes the exhaust MH Pipes or Grail as they both look the same? Or are they the same company.
I'm assuming the below is the one you purchased.

![]() Actually, the picture you linked is the 3.5" version. Mine looks like this (picture is off their website, not my actual car):

The reason it sounds deep like a "man's car" is the single mid-rear section with resonators. Stop the video at 34sec and you see it. Schweet!!!
An equal length setup would ruin that beautiful tone IMO.

@velvet_F82 this is great! I have a Wagner dp and a stage 2 tune with pops and bangs and it sounds like shit. I'm thinking of trying the GRAIL exhaust out and if it doesn't work out, I will go back to stock dp.
Do you know whether this kit includes the mid section/midpipe? Or just the back of the exhaust? |

I tried to buy one a year ago but it was impossible. The product looks good quality but the communication was terrible. Anyway, being March 2020 you will have no problem when you want to remap, you will simply have to unlock that DME in bench mode.
Personally more than a straight pipe from OPFs I would rather remove these ... but in the end it is personal. |
