Running-in Service Cost? (UK)

Chaps

What did you pay for your running-in service? And where from?

Thanks in advance

Nothing!!! Service pack - but likely to be around £200 + VAT. Just an oil change, similar to first service.

Thanks for replies so far.

Reason I ask is that sales were trying to sell me the £999 3-year service pack on the grounds that the run in service is likely to be £500 and the next service (~2yrs later) also £500.
The service pack is not good value for me since I only do 9k miles per year and wouldn't benefit from any more services.

I want to budget for the run-in service and was surprised that it could cost £500.

Any more owners willing to share their costs.

Regards

Mark H

Nah - rubbish - RIS and first service virtually identical. Had my "first service" (not RIS) this week; invoice was £216 (zero VAT as BMW cost). So ~£500 for the pair. Next one is likely to be ~£1,000 though... Depends if you can get another service within the three year period - unlikely. 3 year pack is no longer worth it, unless you can get them to throw it in to seal the deal - don't pay for it!

Once you have the car, you can see service pricing on the app.
For some reason I can't get pricing for Soper right now, but this is Listers Boston.
It's the year 4/36k service that's expensive.

That's brilliant thank you. I looked and couldn't find it.

Looks like I'll be going to Blackpool as it's significantly cheaper than my local HJ dealership!

I paid £160 for the RIS last week, SC Motorworks in Newcastle, two ex-mechanics from a major franchise M trained started up on their own, they can upload service history to the BMW system so it's all recorded. Pretty much all servicing is going to be almost exactly half the cost of a dealership, done by dealership trained mechanics, no brainer for me!

Surely this would not be accepted for cars on PCP ?

I think the stipulation is that they have to use BMW approved parts when servicing, I'm not sure they'd be allowed to force you to go to BMW and only BMW for servicing, that's anti-competition.

Besides how could that be enforced? If I sold the car privately to pay off the PCP balance, how could they come back on that. I think the issue would be with the warranty, which again I believe only stipulates BMW parts are used, not that it's actually done at BMW.

I made a separate thread on this too. The service pack is a carefully planned loophole which rips off most customers.

The one and only outcome which would make that service pack worth the money is if you get the third service (the £1000 service) at 36,000 miles or 4 years... 4yrs is outside of the 3 year pack period, so you would have to do more than 36,000 miles over 3 years which again for most people is more than they're contracted to do.

Everybody has a different finance deal but if you've PCP'd at 10k miles per annum, you'd have to drive 6000 miles more than you've contracted to do to get that service which would see you with a £1080 excess mileage fine at 18p per mile, or you'll get hit with mass depreciation well over the service value if you trade it in, plus the fuel you used, plus the wear and tear...

So it's only of value for a small minority of M drivers. You'd have to be guaranteed to definitely do more than 12k miles per year for 3 years, you'd need ideally a PCP contract over 3 years, and be guaranteed to still have the car at 3 years and be wanting to keep it for longer. If that's you, woohoo you've saved £600 spread out over 3 years!

For anybody else who doesn't fall into that group, the service pack will rip you off to the tune of a few hundred quid as you'd never qualify to get that £1000 service which makes the pack value for the £999 payment you made on day 1.

None of this is a co-incidence, they planned this carefully. The service pack email offer contains scary big service cost numbers and then a smaller number to buy the pack... most people just go for it thinking its a no brainer but...

That's naughty of them to almost double the price of the services to try and flog you a service pack.

I once had a situation whereby a fleet sales guy I knew sold me an M3, the day before the handover he called me and said when the retail guy tries to sell you the service pack, refuse. I asked why, he said that the car already has it on but they will try and charge you for it.

It was a surreal experience sat there refusing his final offer of £300 for 5 years free servicing because I knew it had it on it but couldn't tell him I knew.

I called Harry Fairbairn today and was quoted £335 for the running in service.
I am still waiting on Peter Vardy getting back to me.(second time I have phoned, so much for their 5 star review nonsense they crow about)
It certainly seems expensive for what to all intents and purposes is an oil change !!
