first of all thanks to the OP for all the info and for all that have contributed with additional info and wisdom - since I am contemplating using my ///M4 on a more regular basis which would require it to transport my Specialized Fuse most of the time I am trying to assess the effort / trouble.
so I am bringing back this thread from the dead with the question on how much time did it cost you guys that have done this / how much of a pain in the ass was it ? and for those that "chickened" out ;-) and paid someone to do it - how much did it cost ? (since I most likely would chicken out as well, unless you guys say it was super easy and not worth taking it somewhere) ;-) |

I'm in a similar situation -- except I have not bought my M3...yet! I currently ride 2-3 times per week and have an old Mazdaspeed3 that I use with a 1up rack and love how quick it is to get setup in the morning and teardown when I get home. I will no longer even consider another daily-driver that doesn't have a hitch option. I've always wanted an M3, so picking up an F80 is now a reasonable option since I know I can take my bike without the hassle of a Seasucker. One of the guys I ride with uses a Seasuckser rack since it was the only option with his car. He is now looking to get a cheap pickup since it's such a pain to setup each morning (wiping down the roof, getting it lined up, etc) -- not to mention the noise from a roof rack and the fact that he did drop his bike on the roof once and has two nice dents from his fork to prove it. I'm likely to go with a Curt hitch and then modify the rear diffuser to fit rather than any of the removable hitch options. It seems like the Curt option will require more modification to the diffuser (I'll probably just buy a cheap backup on Amazon and modify that), but I'm fine with that as it appears it may buy an inch of clearance. One thing I've learned with my current car is that I do not want the receiver to be too low to the ground. I don't want to drag the rack on the way in/out of my driveway or when driving on some of the questionable access roads out there. I also want to keep the bike as much above the tailpipes are possible. Though it may seem like a joke, the last thing I need is a melted wheel/tire. Thanks again to all who have posted on the thread and shared part numbers and experiences. |

You can easily fit a roof rack on an M with the sunroof option (that's what I did it - works amazing for a snowboard rack too)
Or you can retrofit a CF roof with mounting holes for the OEM rack. BUT this hitch solution is also awesome and I admire the ingenuity! |

I appreciate this thread as well. I just ordered my hitch and bike rack.
I'll be picking up my M3 next week, so these will be waiting for it's arrival.
