Fabric liners? BMW has used plastic wheel well liners since at least my 2006 Z4 M Roadster, same circa as your E46 M3. My wife's 2011 335is Coupe had plastic liners, as do our 2016 M4 and 2018 M3.

It is for BMW's luxury models. My F10 550i had them.

I did not know that! Kind of laughing that an X3 would be considered a "luxury model". But then again, even the lowliest 1 Series is considered a "luxury model"... because BMW.

My wife’s Toyota Sienna has fabric liners in the rear wheel wells. Not a Rolls, but close! 😬

I have 18k miles on my 2017 M3 and the side skirts have taken a beating from rock chips. My car is mineral white and it really shows. The paint is even rough to the touch down low behind the front wheels on the side skirts. I'm so angry about this because I have the entire front wrapped and car coated with CQuartz, but it's still getting beat up. I know the mud flaps are an option, but I don't like the look, especially on a white car (black would be very noticeable).

Is anyone else frustrated by this? Also, on the rear section where there is factory clear bra, I had a slightly larger piece added and there's still TONS of rock chips just above it, so that looks like crap, too.

There is something about this car that makes it worse than any one I've ever owned in terms of getting beat up in these areas. I know it's sticky tires and wide fender flares, but I wish I had known all this when it was new. Too late now, and it's not like you can easily repaint Mineral White.

For this reason, I will NEVER own a white car again, keeping the side skirt area smooth and chip-free is impossible unless you wrap it, but that's another issue with wrapping ... on white, the edges show dirt like crazy and also it yellows more.

My Porsche Macan has fabric liners and they are indeed a PIA to clean. After the winter the fabric in each well took about 10 minutes to wash out.

My wife's Model 3 has fabric liners. They are so much more quiet then my car even though we have the same tires. Sometime I wish I have those fabric liners even if it's a pita to clean. The noise it makes from the rocks sounds like my wheel wells are getting trashed.

i buyed my alpinwhite 17' M4 LCI competition brandnew and doesnt drive it in winter. i'm so lucky about this - i dont can see that when salt and rock chips from the winter comes on it. in country i drive it very carefully because its a horror when you hear what they rock chips can do with your brandnew love...

all of my sportscar friends are super happy with the michelin supersport and love it - i dont can understand it, i hate him over all!
its really the badest wheel"gum" that i ve been drove

pick up an xpel, installed the mudflaps and change the race tires to a "normal" tire for normal drivers. otherweis your car looks outlike a horrible end of a sandstorm.

Do these apply with 2 sided tape or screw into existing holes? I wouldn't think anyone here is drilling new holes in the fender.

It utilizes 2-3 existing holes and new plastic push pin rivets are provided
You have to drill one screw(also provided)and not into the fender but the plastic wheel liner.
Once you attach the mud flap with the rivets it's easy to find the hole where to screw in the screw, can't make a mistake
He has an actual how to install video on his YouTube channel

Thanks will do! Cool mod. Rear quarters on these cars get hammered so this or full clearbra on quarters is great idea.

Get these if you want removable/reusable rivets for fender liner. Pin is push in and screw out.

MJames, on my 911 turbo, the rear cup 2 tires stick up far beyond the rear bumper and the lower part of the bumper (right by the vents where the air passing through intercoolers are vented) has basically been sandblasted by all the pebbles flung by cup 2 over the 17 years the car has been in service.

It’s just how it is man. The old school paint protection film is still on the car, and some edges are starting to come up and some big rocks (or small rocks contacting at very high speeds...) have gone through it.

My F80 was alpine white and I left the rubber black marks all around the car that the car got from tracking, and a 5mm circular mark on the front bumper from hitting a pebble at 125+ mph on a-bahn when the car was a few hours old.

Hope it helps you feel a bit better. Enjoy the drive and don’t let these little details get you down too much.

Which is why I don't have them. My CS car was U.S. Model so came stock with MPSS. Would love to swap them out when they wear out for cups but nope. Can't stand the sound of gravel pelting my pristine 100k car. Even if I didn't pay that much for it

Si does my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. And that vehicle is designed to get muddy. Wondered about that too. I guess it would make it quieter from rocks hitting it from tires tho. Seems to clean up ok with pressure washer tho.

I have Cup2 tires.

Early on I removed OEM side clear protection and put new larger clear paint protection film at and around the wheel wells. OEM did not protect sufficiently. It works well. I assume the gravel noise is an indicator of lack of sound insulation and sticky tires. Not worried about it.

I am not going to make a tire decision based on this. Why compromise on the driving experience by getting a lesser tire? I am on the fence on Cup2 or MPS4S next but the decision won’t be based on gravel sounds. At all.

Also, I don’t fully understand how the mud flaps help anything when most of the sound is in the wheel well. It makes sense if you like the look but it’s not my jam.
