BM3 ODB entries question
Please dont shoot me down if this is a stupid comment.
I had my car reflashed today by a tuner and I asked them about getting a BM3 to have a guaranteed back up of my tune. They said you have to be careful of the ODB count as once the ECU gets past 18 or so it needs to be replaced? I cant see how this is right? Has anyone heard of such a thing? |

To the OP there is obviously limits how many times a chip can sustain being flashed however lateral thinking indicates the tuners are flashing their cars 100's of times to sort out the tunes. Us mere mortals will never hit these counts.
There may be limits imposed by bmw to stop dealers flashing many times however if this is true the tunes of today by pass this with flash counter freeze. U are golden just buy a tune from the main players in this space.

Flashing will impact a electronic chip (or a multiple set of electronic chips). The failure rate will be determined by MTBF values.
This mainly corresponds to Read/Write cycles and at what stage there is a possibility to corrupt the memory (unable to read/write to the memory). The MTBF of electronic chips nowadays ranges from hundreds of thousands of hours upto millions of hours. The DME is being read constantly while the car is in operation (so read cycles are being executed continuously) With todays technology in chipsets; read and write cycle is not dramatically different in terms of memory wear - so writing to your DME a few more times is not going to make any difference. Enjoy your tune, flash at will and enjoy the car.

Default flash count limit is around 60. Some of the original BM3 testers have hit this limit before.
BM3, MHD, BPM, etc have since implemented flash count freeze, and BPM even developed a method to reverse the count on every flash operation. The only thing people need to be wary about is canned OTS tune resellers, such as, coder(s) who somehow convinced the uninformed that their tunes were genuinely crafted from scratch. P.S. ODB a.k.a. Old Dirty Bastard was a member of the Hip Hop group called Wu-Tang Clan from the early 90s. OBD = On Board Diagnostic Last edited by Spun Pornhub; 12-06-2019 at 01:00 PM.. |
