Ever bought a car for a part, swapped the part, and then sold the car?

Hey all - i'm running on basically no sleep, so let's see if i can make this coherent...

Given just how hot the car market is right now, it makes me think that it could be a great opportunity to actually buy cars that have an attractive part or parts package, swap over that part(s), and then sell the car.

Granted, the spec on the to-be-sold car would be different (i'm mainly thinking about things like wheels, tires, even interior trim wouldn't be too hard.

The juciest thing I could think of is swapping out CCBs for the standard set.
Other easy ones would be 2018 ICON headlights, or M-Performance exhaust for ZCP or std.

Also, in case you haven't heard, i'm not thinking as extreme as the asshole (or genius) who sold a completely stripped-down M4GTS

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1804968

So, has anyone done it, thought about it? Did it work out or did you get stuck in a weird negotiation or "holding the bag" on a slightly off-spec car?

Cheers,
David

no issue with it

its on the buyer to do their due diligence when finding/buying a car. pretty easy to use a vin decoder to check options and look at pics.

only issue would be if the seller posted pics different from how the car actually is. (posting pics with icon lights and then the buyer getting the car without it)

questionable, but also seems like high risk for little reward

C'mon son.

What's probably going to happen is you're going to buy the car - pay a premium market price on it + tax, then sell it for the same or less after pulling a fast one.

I seriously believe you're going to be a bag holder. There are other ways to profit / come up.

To each his own, but OP I would recommend you do not engage in this type of practice. It's shady and unethical. Karma is a bitch. You sound like you are business minded--im sure you can come up with another way to make money. Good luck.

Hey all - thanks for the thoughts / feedback. Sincerely.

CLEARLY I have spent so much time with two fully disassembled cars, i'm seeing them as a combination of a metric fuckton of parts, so i'm glad you all chimed in with your honest thoughts.

Sales tax alone on flipping a car for a part makes this sounds like a really bad idea. Overall it sounds like a bad idea anyway. Get some sleep.

Sure! It’s perfectly legal! Which makes it OK

However likely a losing proposition from many angles.

My guess is the majority of people would find this somewhat sleazy. Including myself. But hey… if it helps you get to some sleep why not go for it.

Thanks for sharing!

Risky for just a few bucks. Maybe crypto or GameStop would be better.

Bitcoin was cheap last week, less than 30K, slowly coming back up.

Pretty sure there's some confusion regarding OPs idea. I think he's asking about buying a car and taking the parts out and then listing the car showing the condition at the time of his sale so the parts would not be included. I think some of you guys think he wants to sell it using old pictures.

That said like most everyone on here i don't think this would pan out well. Tax alone would kill any savings. Trading it in to a dealer to avoid taxes then nets you less overall on the cars sale

I've got a better idea :
If there's something you don't like about your car and you wish it's got something which it's currently lacking: sell the car and buy the one you desire!
Much simpler and with surer result.

i think he's buildling a custom F81 Touring M3 wagon.

For a part like CCB which is like 8k or something new from BMW. it would be cheaper to remove them from a car and then put steels on. and sell it like that. the difference between two used M3s, one with ccb and one without, all things being equal is definitely not 8k on the current market.

but yeah once you factor in the taxes it doesn't make sense.

probably better to just by the CCB new. sell the steel brakes to recoup some of the cost. There are plenty of f30 guys who would buy M3 brakes out there. Same goes for the headlights.

I had a leased Macan Turbo that I was turning in, and replacing with a Macan GTS.

I realized that alcantara sun visors, which are iirc a $1400 option, were fitted on the Turbo. Easy job to quickly swap before returning.

I contemplated it for a minute before deciding that yeah, karma's a bitch

If you like doing a lot of work, with high risk, questionable morals and very little financial return then yea go for it.

Let this post serve as a lesson on why you absolutely need to do your homework and be knowledgeable about the model of car you want to buy (specs, options etc) especially on the used car market. When buyers refuse to purchase a "re-optioned" auto then these practices will be less attractive.
