Thinking of trading my M235 for an M4
Hello all. I was hoping to get some insight from you guys!
I have a 2015 CPO M235 xDrive with 35,000 miles on it. I was thinking of trading it in for a 2017 M4 with 16,000 miles with the competitive package and other features. I owe $12,000 on the M235 and would get about 25,000 for it (assuming I'm unable to find a private buyer quickly). I would be getting the M4 for 59,000 before anything. Side note... I live in northern West Virginia where it snows relatively frequently. I was thinking if I do go through with it I may find a beater for ~2-3,000 bucks or invest in winter tires. What is this groups thoughts on that possible transaction? |

Broadly speaking, I think getting m4 instead of 235 is a good move.
But you would essentially be paying $70k for a used m4. If you're ok with that, go for it. Just my $0.02, keep your awd 235 as a daily driver / winter beater and get an pure sports car. You are essentially willing to pay $45k to get a sportier car, and you could get a c6z, new c7z51, many kinds of used Porsche for $45k. |

You would have to come up with the cash for the negative equity or roll that into a new car loan, so your $59k m4 would be paid with a $70K+ note. It all boils down to how much you want the m4, and I do think m3/m4 is a really nice car. I just worry that in everyday driving you really need to appreciate the intangibles that the m4 will bring to the table (different exhaust sound, different steering feel, etc) because it's not like you will be maxing out the performance, so your daily experience would be pretty similar. I personally like the "always on" feeling of a pure sports car, where the steering shakes over road imperfections, you feel very directly through your seat, and have the low seating position that you just don't get in a larger sedan based vehicle and as a result connected a lot more with the cars I had after f80. so I won't be the guy telling you to get m4 at any cost |

I assume you didn't come to this board to discuss your finances, as only you can know if this is a reasonable transaction for you given your overall financial health. Any time you trade a relatively new car in, money will be "lost." The best financial advice is always to buy a lightly used car (e.g.,2-3 years old) and drive it until the maintenance costs become unreasonable vs. the worth of the car.
Now, with that out of the way, this is a car forum, and this section focuses on the F8X M3/4, which most of us own and enjoy. So YES, it is your OBLIGATION to trade the M235 in for a full-fat M4. You will love it. GL

I'd keep the M235I. Better car for the snow, you still owe money on it, and it's still a really nice and quick car. I'd hold out until the next generation of M cars come out to hop on one, it's kind of late in the cycle right now IMO.

financial issues aside, i traded in my '16 M235 for a used '14 M4 with about 16000 miles, about a month ago.
the M4 is a different beast altogether but i do miss the drivability of the ZF gearbox vs the DCT. maybe i just need some time to get used to the DCT. that said, i am loving every minute i have with the M4 and have totally no regrets! i'll say... DO IT! LOL.

I personally would not drive M cars, or any other nice cars in the snow in the DC metro area since the salt will destroy the paint. Had to drive in it the other day in a sentra and cringed when the salt started splashing the car like tiny rocks. Cant imagine if that happened to me in my M3 or M2.

Great points everyone. Yeah I only owe 12k left on the M235. The M4 is just something I really want to have.. I bought the M235 thinking it would be good enough for the snow and to feed my need for an amazing car. I was apparently wrong on the second point.
