BMW M4 to Porsche GT3?

I know 98% of people after just reading the title are going to say do it without a second thought but I really want to know if it's worth the money. I understand that these two cars are not to be compared and they're in completely different tiers. As a general upgrade I want to know if GT3 is the way to go or if there's something better in the same price range. Looking to daily drive, rally and track it here and there.

997.1
997.2
991.1 or 991.2 GT3 ?

Regardless.....they're all truly the best drivers car for the money. You will not be disappointed and unlike our M4's they either hold value or will go up slightly. I can sell my GT4 now for more than I paid for it....but I can't imagine ever selling it as its a 1 year only GT car.

Planning on adding a 991.1 GT3 in 2020 myself. Do it !

Not that I have one or can speak from experience, but the people that I know who own GT3 mention it's a pretty uncomfortable daily driver and would not own one if it was their only car.

what's your definition of "better" ? If it's fun per dollar spent, there's lots better.

My $0.02 if you're a casual track user and you want a pure 911 experience, go for it but check on GTS first.

If you're a track rat, you probably wouldn't be asking and would know already, but my $0.02 is get a used 7cup car instead

And sorry for the obvious question but check on body panel cost and consumables and service cost, especially if you are going to rally. I got a huge reality check on cost of maintaining 911 used hard this year. Lol.

A buddy of mine has a 997.2 gt3 and I'd agree with the statement that I'd never DD it. Mostly I just think it kind of drones, and also scrapes on every little bump.. absolutely stupid for city driving.

I'm so sorry I should have been more specific. A 2016 Porsche GT3.

I'm a sucker for an exclusive car and I can't get over that beautiful GT3 wing so no GTS for me but I did look at it originally. I don't mind a rough ride for a daily as long as the car does what I want when I need it to.

You could try to find a 991.1 GTS with the aerocup kit. Not quite as cool as the GT3 wing, but definitely a more DD friendly car.

I got my GTS last summer and just love it!

for looks get a narrow body 911 and put Aerokit and call it done

for being a track rat, I guess that's up for each person to decide where they are in their learning curve and their wallet size and their goals.

I use my modded 6TT to drive to the track, and use a spec Miata, so I'm biased on this subject

I just made the jump from my M4 into a 991.2 GT3.

I have absolutely no problems with it as a daily, granted my tolerance for discomfort is high. Hell, I embrace it. Reminds me that the car I'm driving isn't meant for dull commuting and she wants to be unleashed into the canyons and track. And that's also with bucket seats which add another degree of discomfort.

However I've been told the 991.2 engine is much more "compliant" at low RPMs than the 991.1, but I don't think that would change my opinion on it as a daily.

But based on your post and asking if there's a "better" option, I don't know if this is the car for you since it's not really clear what you're looking for. I do think the 991.1 GT3 is a great value right now as everyone is still scrambling for the 991.2. Plus with that extended engine warranty it's a pretty safe bet.

Happy to answer any questions you have on my experience making the switch.

We have a 2018 GT3. Awesome car but for sure not the best for DD IMO. The car itself is great, just the seats getting in and out of. It's a pain, literally... if you can afford to DD a GT3, then do it!

Looking for something that drives better than a BMW, can stand with supercars, won't have people coming up to me as much as an exotic would, reliable engine, great sound, track ready, somewhat exclusive and under$180k.

Many of my criteria as well. I use it for work sometimes and it's a bit less ostentatious pulling up in a GT3 (most folks just think it's a 911) than say, a Lambo or R8. Not that I'd daily either of those.

I'd confidently say it checks all those boxes. Getting in and out can be a pain with buckets but there's nothing wrong finding a model with the comfort seats.

If you want more comfort, give a Turbo S a look. Especially used, you can get a great bargain. Not as soulful as a GT3 and doesn't sound as great but I think too many folks write it off...It's still a great drivers car and with a proper exhaust they sound good (not the same as a GT3, but better than an M4...). I'd test drive a Turbo S, GTS, and GT3 head-to-head.

That's a really broad list and is wide open for anyone's interpretation. It's all the way from a modded z06 in the $40k range to an almost new gt3rs at $170k, and you can get a dedicated track only car, trailer and tow vehicle and be well under budget.

Gt3 is never a bad choice, but just don't be surprise if you aren't 3x faster than a 12 yr old z06 with mild mods around a track just because your car cost 3x more

Good luck and have fun.

You've pretty much described the GT3 to a T.

Other options? Maybe the Corvette Z06 and ZR1, if you'd consider that. McLaren wants to position the 570S/GT as.a 911 Turbo/GT3 fighter, but it still fails the "not an exotic" test

GT3 may cost more up front, but you could very well lose less in depreciation vs a M3. GT Porsche's hold their value very well. That is why second hand 2016 GT3's range from $140k to $175k on Autotrader, virtually what some of them cost new 3 years ago. Try to find a 991.2 allocation at or near msrp, you could very well drive it for a couple years and only be out insurance/consumables.

Couple others...consider these non-exotic, very reliable, sound great, track ready, exclusive.

AMG GT-R (~155k+) initially 2000 production units, could be more now.

R8 RWS (~$150k) 999 production units(320 North America)
