Actual iDrive 5 to iDrive 6 Upgrade?
So as I wait for my MY17 M3 with I assume iDrive 5 I figured I would ask the question.... Does anyone know if a "real" upgrade from v5 to v6 is possible? I have seen the v6 Lite coding topics, and I understand some older cars cant get up to v5 because of hardware limitations. Do we know if the same limitation exist going from v5 to v6?
It would be a tough pill to swallow to receive a car in the next few weeks just as ones are coming with v6 and have no upgrade path.... |

There are two variants of iDrive 6. The larger screen version which has touch screen compatibility and the smaller screen version that will be in the 2018 cars.
I've been presuming that ID6_Light is just the version for smaller screens and not some older or limited version but I'd love to hear if I'm right or not.

MY18 F8x cars will only come with iDrive6 Lite which you can also code for MY17 vehicles with iD5. There was a HW upgrade from 4 > 5.
The full version which you see on the 7 and new 5 series will not be available for us because it requires touch screen and the ability to read hand gestures. Our cars simply don't have the required hardware for these features to work so we will be stuck with the Lite version. I don't think F8x chassis will receive another significant iDrive hw upgrade until the next generation. I think this will be it for F8x. iD6 Lite has the same functionality as iD5 with an updated UI. |

I wouldn't say 100% SOL. Most likely you can purchase the iDrivr 5.0/6.0 head unit and screen and just swap out the hardware and have it coded. I did this for my iDrive 2 to 3 back when I had an E60 M5.

So is BMW going to offer the software update for those with I drive 5 or is this something that we have to do on our own?

Don't judge it by the 3 tile screen. I don't find that layout as useful either but do not mind having it since all the data is "live". The updates to other areas of the menu system is where I think 6Lite is really nice.
Here are a few other screens. I posted this up in another thread but thought I'd share here as well. |

Pic #1 - This looks identical to 5.0, as far as I can tell. Is there a difference for nav/maps? Pic #2 - Is this the main menu look, replacing the 5.0 tiles? Pic #3 - Also looks quite similar to 5.0, though seems as if there's a few more options on the left side. Do the tiles comprise the majority of the change? |
