Great writeup man. Sorry to hear about your father - my dad passed away in January, and he loved road trips as well. Reading your post just made me clear my calendar for his upcoming birthday so I can spend the day on the road thinking about him.
Be well. |

Enjoy it. There were so many places and moments where I thought, "Wow, I can't wait to tell Dad about this," only to realize he was gone. To be honest, the trip really made me come to that realization. The last few months have been super hectic getting administrative stuff taken care of for Mom, and being the oldest that has mostly fallen on me. So, I hadn't really taken any time to digest. He also wasn't well the last few years and was already sort of a shell of his prior self and this allowed me to really reflect on old him and the road trips he took us on. I also got to reflect a lot on life and how fortunate and blessed I've been. It was just a range of emotions and very cathartic.

First, sorry about your loss. I lost my dad on July 4th.
Second, beautiful drive with fulfilling memories. I would do the same thing but in an M5 (long story regarding my dad). Thank you for the post. |

Enjoyed your post. Funny to hear u mention the instructors by name when many of us here also know them. That's the job I want in my next life.
Life is short - hats off to you for taking time to have fun and to reflect. You passed right through Charlotte, current home town and then Shawnee OK where I spent a few good years. Beautiful highways out there as u mention. Used to run out to Taos NM from there to ski. You reminded me of those days. |

Thank you both. Yea...I've kind of become a bit of a wine snob. Fun fact...the guy that founded Dunn Vineyards, Randy Dunn, was big at Caymus before he went out on his own. His wines are exceptional.

Thanks! I don't know if you saw the selfie journal from the last day; there was definitely an effort to hold back some emotion. I didn't originally intend to include the selfie journal portions, but they really added color to the daily videos.

Great post. I lost my dad 2 years ago. And for sure- any tribute to a Dad so detailed like this deserves two thumbs up.

Wonderful pics. I have done cross country NY to LA and back 3 times. 2002, 2017 and this past July. Back in 2002 it was after a stretch of losing both my parents to cancer within 10 months. So I know what you have been going through. I am happy for you that you got to do this and want to wish you condolences for your dad. I noticed that you visited many of the places I did. Hopefully you will get to do the I 70 route. I got to do it in July and it was beautiful.

Pro Shots from VIR M School
As I find myself regularly and fondly remembering this amazing journey, here are the "pro" shots I finally ordered...$6 each was a bit steep but whatever - YOLO!

Epic journey and awesome write-up.
I had the opportunity to drive from VA Beach to San Diego some years back in my E92 M3. Drove south to SE Georgia to pick my dad up, but did southern route through Biloxi, New Orleans, Dallas, Flagstaff, Hoover Dam, Vegas, etc. Funny enough, we saw the Blue Hole as well! I love finding random things like that.
