Have you actually owned or driven an M car for an extended period of time

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
There are many people that post bold comments and criticism of M cars on this forum. And many criticize some of us for putting money down on a car before we get a chance to test drive it. I like the other M cars I have owned and have faith that I will love the new one.

I just want to know how many people are on this forum that have never owned or driven an M car for at least a month? Those people who have are more likely to put money down with confidence that they will get a great product from the M division.

Any thoughts?

My primary vehicle has been an M3 since late 2001, '02 E46 M3 coupe, to '11 E90 M3 Sedan. Both times I ordered and purchased without "test driving", lol whatever that means. I would order a new M3 without hesitation without "test driving", but of course I would like to drive one first if I had the chance, but it wouldn't stop me from buying, it's only a car for pete's sake!

Been driving M3s for the last 10+ years but never bought one without driving it first. Not ideal IMO not to drive it but have confidence that I will like the net result of all the changes. First on the list for F80 ED with my dealer.

Me, still have my 2001 E46. However, like the poster noted above, I'll be attempting to do a test drive first (and reading the forums for impressions) before I order.

Of the 10 BMW's that I've owned, 5 have been M3's.....
  • 2003 M3
  • 2005 ZCP M3
  • 2008 E90 M3
  • 2009 E92 M3
  • 2011.5 ZCP E92 M3

I didn't test drive ANY of them before buying them. In fact, when I purchased my first BMW - a 2002 330ci - I purchased it without a test drive as well. The only two BMW's that I test drove before buying were my 2013 X5 M-Sport and my current 2014 335i M-Sport.

I owned 2 M3s. A 2002 E46 (bought in 2001) that I owned for 7 years that I enventually traded for my current E92 in 2008.

I ordered both my previous M3s without test driving them. There was no hesitation on my part and I was very enthousiastic about both. I am much less enthousatic about the F8X and I am for sure concerned about the S55. I voted the following because it is the closest to my frame of mind:

Quote:
"Owned an M car and am skeptical of ordering one without a test drive"
But I decided to take a leap of faith and order one anyway. I guess if I don't like it, I will end-up keeping it much less longer than I did the other 2.

I have owned 1999 M3, 2002 M3, 2004 M3, 2008 M3, 2011 1M. All have been my sole and daily drivers.

I would not hesitate to order a new ///M car without the opportunity to test drive. The division has never let me down, and I don't expect it to do so in the future.

I'm chose the 4th option. I used to own an E90M. I'm not "skeptical," I know it'll be a great car, but I'm cross shopping it with the Cayman S so I want to see if the price/driving experience equation is better in the M4 than the Cayman. And in order to do that I need to test drive the M4. I did buy my M3 without test driving one.

I test drove a Cayman for about an hour and half this weekend, and I have to say, the driving experience was phenomenal. Reminded me of a Ferrari 360 I drove a few years ago. Very raw and racy feeling.

The M4 is going to to have to come pretty close. In terms of price, the difference would be +$9k for the Cayman S, lightly optioned compared to a very well optioned M4 w/military pricing ($72kish). Decisions, decisions.

The E90 M3 I've had for the last 3 years is my first M car ( I've driven all M3s except the E30 ). I've owned other BMWs as the E21,E30s,E36s,an E60 and an F10. I bought them all with the outmost confidence and was never disappointed (except once) and it would be the same now if it wasn't for the F10 and the F series M cars I've driven ( M5, M6GC, M6 coupe and M6 vert ). The feeling is similar between the non Ms and the Ms with isolation and weight making them feel less connected and agile than prior cars.

I'm now concerned about any BMW, the F8X including. Will I buy it without a test drive? Maybe and maybe not, I sure hope I get a chance to drive one before I need to close my order.

But they will see our "real" M forum of owners and future owners represented. I HATE HATERS!!!!!!! Its a waste of energy listening to them, trying to convey an opinion and worst off, fighting with them.

We are why the M division makes these cars!!

Never owned, but drove a E92 rental for two days in Dubai. Placed deposit on M4 two years ago.

Owned E46 M3 for 8 years. Ordering F80 M3 without test driving. But the $1,000 deposit is refundable and will test drive it when it is delivered. Will buy either way, test drive is just a formality.

I'm in the same boat. I haven't ever been disappointed with a BMW.....ever! Why should I start doubting them now?

Having owned 2 e92's (non-M and M), I've gotten a good feel of the step up the M provides in all the various aspects. Now that I am in an F30, I would say I'm fairly confident I could estimate what the F80 would be like and order one. However, it would be a much quicker decision if my local dealer actually had one for me to take a poke around in.
