6MT Trans Fluid Change

Putting this out there for others who are interested in getting their 6MT transmission fluid changed. I requested a quote from the SA during the 1200 mile run-in-service, bc I saw that some members on here got straight up hosed with high prices, and I assume its due to the fact they just let the techs run wild.

Parts- $71.14
Labor- $82.92
Total: $154.06

I plan to perform a trans fluid change every other scheduled maintenance.

I searched for a thread on costs for services by the dealer, but came up empty handed. I feel this would be a very useful sticky for all if there were entries from members based on what services/prices they paid. Just sayin!

Do you notice any difference in the quality of shifting/level of notchiness after the service?

It feels smoother, but that could be due to running in efficiency mode bc of the NorEaster slamming the Philadelphia region. I'll know better in a day or two, when I have the chance to open her up more. The main reason I did this was for my piece of mind, and I thought the logic behind changing the fluid from others was solid- not t mention the tech said he would do the same if it were his 6MT. I think most steer clear of changing the fluid due to the out of pocket cost; which you can see above, isnt much at all if you aren't getting raped by the stealership.

I would challenge them on quoted price. The DCT takes a ton more fluid so the price will be different from 6MT, but how significantly.....

Yep, my car is 6MT so I have no idea how they came up with $900...

I could text you an image of my receipt if you feel it will help you get to a more reasonable figure. At least you asked for it to be quoted first.

Funny... I just took my car in yesterday to get my 1200 mile service done. I told them I wanted to do the tranny fluid as well (I have a 6MT). First, the SA told me that the transmission is "sealed" so the fluid could not be changed. So after I schooled him a bit, including telling him the oil capacity of the 6MT transmission (thanks to the info on the forums), he talked to the shop foreman, ultimately getting me a quote for the work.

The quote? $822.47.....WTF!?! Upon closer inspection at the quote, it had 9 liters of transmission fluid on it. The DCT takes 8.4 liters so that quote would make sense for a DCT car, except my car was a 6MT, and my VIN was on the quote sheet !!

After pointing out this very blatant discrepancy, I was subsequently told the transmission oil was not in stock.... oh really....?? After that I just stopped asking and waited for the 1200 mile service to be done.

I get mine from ECS Tuning. It's OEM oil, but you can get MT oil from other brands.. You need 2 quarts. Dealer quoted me something $45 per bottle.

yeah - so far 2 of the tampa area dealers tell me "we don't recommend transmission fluid flushes on any of our vehicles. it's fully synthetic fluid if you insist we do it, so it's going to be at least $500 minimum".

wow

Is this manual transmission just like any other with the two plug drain/fill system? I may do this on my own like I've done with my other BMW. Would just be the cost of fluid basically and maybe a washer.

Based on the info I have read so far, yes, that is the basic procedure (there is an official BMW F8X procedure floating around here some place). You will want to get a fluid transfer pump though just based on the configuration of the fill plug.

Well.... the major aspect of this for those looking to get their Trans Fluid changed is whether or not you have the 6MT or DCT - the dealer told me that the cost would be dramatically different, mainly due to the difference in fluid each takes.

DCT has always been more expensive to do.
