Checked the mountain pass websites looks like just about everything is closed now due to snow. Looking for alternate plans for fun things to see/do that don't involve mountain pass driving.

Wow. Just saw this. Did you find alternative routes?

I ended up not doing much mountain driving except maybe a 15 mile stretch up from the autobahn to Cafe Winkerstuberl. The roads were all clear with no snow or ice, I probably could have gotten away with just driving my car on the summer tires but I rented a crappy M2C DCT from BMW which I regret.

Drove from Munich to Stuttgart then back past Munich to Salzburg/Berchtesgaden and back to Munich. Did about 900 KM mostly autobahn driving. It snowed a little bit the last 20-30 mins on the way back from Salzburg to Munich but nothing stuck to the ground or froze.

Damn man, sorry to hear that. Sounds like you didn't heed my advice and make hotel reservations. Good call!

What was crappy about the M2C?

I appreciate the advice but did some more reading on the Castle and it sounded like a tourist trap and I didn't want to spend half a day hiking up and down due to the short time frame.

I did end up making hotel reservations in Munich, Stuttgart and Salzburg. So far in my 2 trips the hotels in Stuttgart are by the far the best. Much nicer and larger rooms.

The M2C rental car was DCT (boring), sunroof (gross), small blue brakes, non M seats (old M2 seats), and was on 235 square snow tires so it just wasn't a lot of fun.

I did mine in Dec. and it was great. It was my third ED and I have done them different times during the year and all were great. The only downside of doing it in Dec. is that you can't go to the Nurburgring or any track for that matter.
