Variable gear (VG) ratios are gears that transform into different sizes depending on the M button setting and adjust on the fly. I guess you haven't encountered VG in your aviation field? Standard feature on M cars equipped with "Transformers" package.

M1:
- sport - sport - sport - DSC: on - HuD: normal M2: - sport+ - sport - sport+ - DSC: on - HUD: M View I sometimes toggle to steering: sport+ if I'm on a long freeway drive or doing a canyon run I sometimes toggle to suspension: sport+ if I'm doing some hard curves on a canyon run. Otherwise I find it too harsh and I like having better traction. And I find I get this in the softer modes. Like when raining I'm always in suspension: Comfort mode.

M1:
- Throttle: Sport Plus - Suspension: Passive - Steering: Sport Plus - Transmission: S3 - DSC: On - HUD: N/A M2: - Throttle: Sport Plus - Suspension: Passive - Steering: Sport Plus - Transmission: S3 - DSC: MDM - HUD: N/A I recently switched from Sport to Sport Plus steering, and after a short adjustment period I am loving it. Originally I had found Sport Plus way too heavy and thought I'd never use it, but I now admit I've totally reversed my opinion on that. |

I am curious though, since your M1 and M2 settings are identical save for DSC/MDM, why don't you just use the center console switch for when you want MDM instead of wasting an M-setting?

M1 - City
Throttle: Sport+ Suspension: Comfort Steering: Sport Transmission: S1 Traction Control: On HUD: M View M2 - Spirited Throttle: Sport+ Suspension: Sport Steering: Sport Transmission: S3 Traction Control: MDM HUD: M View When I am driving around town I usually leave it in the startup configuration but I change the suspension to Comfort. The M View HUD reminds me that I need to manually shift. Once I get the CAN Flap I will probably change M1 throttle to Sport-- currently I have it set to Sport+ so I can enjoy my MPE |

Only because I would rather be able to switch to MDM without moving my hand from the wheel and looking down at the console. And anyway, I've never had the desire for another M Drive profile with any other alternate settings, so M2 would otherwise go unused.

Mine
Summer: M1 = Suspension = Sport+, Throttle = Sport+, Steering = Sport+, Traction control full off M2 = Suspension = Comfort, Throttle = Sport, Steering = Sport, Traction control full off Winter: M1 = Suspension = Sport+, Throttle = Sport+, Steering = Sport+, Traction control full off (Obviously I don't use M1 in the winter) M2 = Suspension = Comfort, Throttle = Sport, Steering = Sport, Traction control full on I have more recently started to click the throttle to efficient to see what its like if I'm just tooling to work. |

I'm close to that but my M1 is "wife-in-the-car mode": sport throttle, S2 transmission. I also like S+ steering much better than comfort although at first I thought it was unnaturally weighted. Also for M2 I have mine like yours ... on cold tires or in the rain I manually hit the TC button since I know that when I get in the car. Like you, if I want M2 on the road I never want to look away from what I'm doing
