Return leased vehicle with mods still installed?
Sorry if this has been discussed earlier!
My lease is up and I will be turning my f82 back to the dealer. I have a vf stage 1 tune with no issues. Do you think I can return it with the tune, m performance trunk lid spoiler and the blacked out grill and side markers? Is that something they would charge me for? I have not scheduled the final inspection yet. Thank you in advance for any helpful feedback. This is my first lease and my first experience with BMW |

I've seen leases at my dealership put back on the lot with mods such as, wheel spacers and tinted tail lights. But then again, these leases were former employee returns from said dealership.

I would definitely remove the tune. BMW could force you to buy-back the car for breach of contract if they find out about the tune.

Thanks to all that responded!!!
Vf or vendors charge a good dollar just to delete the tune. I also never bought the cable to do it myself. I read that the dealers sometimes reprogram the ECU during service or maintenance so I thought it would be easy. |

This is going to be a hot topic for BMW NA going forward with OBDII tunes. Wouldn't be surprised if the CPO inspection process is tweaked for flash tunes.

Every BMW lease I have turned in has been modified. All fine. Now granted I have a really good relationship with my preferred dealers who "overlook" stuff like that during the lease turn in. I usually remove the tune (piggy back to sell) or flash back (for emissions). If you are getting into another BMW a lot of times they will casually ignore your mods.
Caveat: have never done anything crazy like lower my car 80" or our airbags or widebody kits or $6k wheel. All my mods are either engine/exhaust and minor cosmetic changes on the outside and in.

This is what happens when you returned a modded lease. The next owner gets screwed.

Just went through this. You don’t have a cable so things could get interesting. If you are certain the dealer is NOT going to auction the car then def flash back to some form of stock. Def have your tuner shop get vf to write you a stock like file. Have your vin handy. Cost me $50 bucks to revert but I had a cable.

In 2010 I turned in my 07 335i Coupe, it appeared to be in mint condition with low miles (24k at the time). I was in a serious accident with it in late 08 (not my fault) and sustained $30k in damage and the insurance company didn’t want to total. Carmax and Autocheck both showed no accident history at the time of lease turn in. Buyer beware.

OP - You need to find out if the dealer is buying the car from NA for resale or sending it back.
Chances are they will retail it if it's clean. But why not remove your mods for resale to make some of your money back?

I agree I should but I didn't plan properly. Story of my life. Due to my work schedule and some family things, time right now is worth more than the money I'd be getting back. I would have to pay someone to remove the parts and install the stock parts as I cannot do the handy work myself.
My car has just under 75k in miles, it will likely go to auction right? I would like to think the next owner will love the car as it sits right now with the extra bump in hp, quicker shifts and burbles. |

with ALL lease returns, if you have questions about anything, contact the dealer first before hand and they will tell you what needs to be done. Dealers can vary. This way you dont spend time and money doing something that maybe you dont have to do etc.. GL
