2015 vs 2016 vs 2017

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hi everyone! Brand new to the forum and I'm looking to buy used M4 in the next 6-9 months. My question is this...is there any reason to choose a 2015 vs 2016 or 2017? We're there any significant improvements made from one year to the next, especially pertaining to how it drives?

This will be my first BMW so please excuse my naivety. Thanks in advance!!

Wants:
DCT
No sunroof
Low miles <20,000

Competition package released for '16 and '17. Also torque reduced in 1st gear to help with traction issues.

The low RPM torque output reduction is in all gears, not only 1st.

2016+ has the lci with improved Idrive and zcp option. Generally safer to avoid first year models.

2015, ‘16, ‘17 and ‘18, all still had the same 0-60 posted speed times even though torque was reduced? Was it 406tq all the way through the production years? HP 425?

Statistically from our unofficial quantifiable spun crank poll, according to the numbers.

2015 tuned failures - 1.99 %
2016 tuned failures - 2.39 %
2017 tuned failures - 3.19 %

2015 NO failures - 15.54 %
2016 NO failures - 13.94 %
2017 NO failures - 8.37 %

Therefore the NEWER the car = the more chance of a spun crank.

Get a 2015, the older the car the less chance of your crank hub spinning because the bolt has been on the car the longest. You know how as the car gets older with more miles on it, bolts and fasteners seem harder to take off and some even seize? Well same idea.. but again I'm pulling this theory out of my ass but it kinda makes sense right? RIGHT?

Not sure - haven’t been tracking, just logical older = cheaper. My lease residual was around $53K when I turned it in a month and 1/2 ago. Dealer has it on the lot for about that amount, but it was highly optioned, including CCBs.

That sounds about right on a used lot w/ CCBs, and not bad pricing with the brake upgrade and loaded. I misquoted, was thinking trade in value as I just went through it at my local dealership. They listed my trade at $51K and it sold pretty quickly as I was tracking it. A ‘15 F80 w/ manual, executive pkg and 19s, that’s it.

The 2017s have revised engine bedplates which may/may not be of importance to you. Personally I would stay away from 2015s, not a fan of first/second year models.

Browse the forum, there is a wealth of information.

Good luck with your purchase!

You want a '16 or newer with comp package. Other options are more preference. I car with full leather has a MUCH more premium look and feel inside.

Peak torque was not changed. They simply reduced torque at very low RPM. Originally, the S55’s torque was rated at 406lb-ft @1850-5500 RPM. Now, it is 406lb-ft @ 2350-5500 RPM.

It does not affect 0-60mph times as the revs would never be below 2350 RPM during a maximum acceleration launch.

The new bed plate was introduced starting with Dec 2015 production.

I wouldn't have bought an m4 without the latest '18 headlights and led rears.

Is that torque curve the same for the 2018 CP, coming in at 2350?

Yes. The torque curve is identical for the base and CP tunes from 0 to 5500 RPM.

Only the CS and GTS tunes make more torque below 5500RPM.

As per usual, buy the newest (e.g., with the most warranty), least mileage car that you can comfortably afford. Personally I would buy one with ZCP, but that is why I waited until it came out. GL.
