Anticipating the new F90 M5 in 2017

What are people's expectations of the new M5 to be? I know there isn't a whole lot of info out there yet, except AWD variants and around 600bhp 😄 Is this going to get slimmed down and offer a sporty drive?

My guess is it will not be slimmed down much if at all. The new 5 closes the gap to the 7 even more than in the past so my guess is that it will be a monster fast, mile eating, cruiser that can embarrass most cars out there off the line all while sipping a Perrier water lol! When a corner comes up my thought is that it will be of the same which is flattish cornering but feel like a big car still.

AWD+600hp+M= Yes please!

Will be ordering one for an ED after my F80 lease ends. This car will be doing low 3 second 0-60s I am sure, along with running low 11 second quarters at 125+ STOCK!

Why do so many BMW owners want the M division to abandon everything they have stood for and go with AWD? There is so much wrong with that for ultimate performance, even with the 20/80 split that is rumored.

+1
To me the cars dont need to be faster or have the best handling. Cars need characters!

It's like typewriter was replaced with laptop but hey the feeling is gone.

Moreover I dont see myself driving electric cars with the passion.

In this case, M cars with AWD and no RWD option? It's not M to me.

BTW looking forward to see what BMW will bring.

Cheers

600+ rear wheel torque is useless on a RWD car. Plus lets get real, a 5000lb, twin turbo V8 sedan isn't exactly what the M division has stood for.

99% of M5/M6 owners don't track their car. Hell, even 90% of M3/M4 owners don't track their cars.

Don't know about you, but I'd love to be able to merge into traffic or perform a quick WOT run(avoiding accident or for fun) in the wet and not spin uselessly.

I think the M2/3/4 can stay RWD, but AWD would be an awesome option, I would for sure tick that box.

if they didnt go awd they would restrict power. how can you compete when your down on power and traction. imo awd should be made an option.

I'm all for AWD when it's executed properly and so far I don't think BMW really understands how it is supposed to work in a performance car.

And I would also argue that Ferrari and GM have figured out how to manage that kind of power just through the rear wheels.

I don't know the M5 sales numbers are but I have to think that they're way, way down since the E60. Adding more and more power to these cars doesn't make them better, I wish BMW would focus on keeping the weight down and make them a full-size car for people who want driver enjoyment. Putting a giant engine into a car without making it more agile and fun to drive shouldn't be what M cars are about.

I'm all about an AWD M5 if they do actually produce one. Not so stoked on the overall size/weight of the vehicle.

Agreed on the size and weight arguments. Hell, the new M5 is going to be bigger than the old E38 7 series.

It's more like an M7. I still like the idea of a sedan that's faster than most performance cars in a straight line. The current F80 should actually be the "M5".

The 2018 E63 AMG S has an AWD system with a "drift" mode that allows it to deactivate the front end, making it a RWD car. I'd like to see that option on the next M5.

Genius idea, really...great traction when you need it (i.e., straight line acceleration, inclement weather)....and oversteer when you want it (i.e., track session)...

There are plenty of cars out there with over 600hp and rear wheel drive, most of which are considered world leading.

But I agree with you. Drop the dam weight of the car to E39 levels, keep the power or go up 10% and add more rear tire.

There is no denying such cars exist, the problem is that they are next to worthless on the street/US highways.

These cars live at the track or run drag radials to put power down on the strip. In the "real world" they struggle to put power down on a non-prepped surface... forget about when it's slightly damp or cold outside.

Hell, I ran street legal drag radials(NT555Rs) on both my 6MT F80 and modded 6MT 135, just to get power down during summer months. What can I say, I enjoy hooking up!

If the new M5 doesn't go AWD, I will be looking elsewhere. Here in Minnesota with the cold weather and rain throughout spring/summer/fall RWD gets old pretty quickly. The last thing I hear was that the BMW M5 would NOT be going AWD.

Right now considering the e63 AMG / Jeep Hellcat whenever those 2 come out.

Audi interiors are pretty amazing. However, every time I drive one, I feel extremely underwhelmed. It doesn't have that "BMW-feel". I have driven the TT-RS, S3, RS5, RS6(2003), TTS(3200LBS with 292hp)

I own a 2016 S3, the car is a beast for what it is, especially when launched. However, I am extremely BORED with it. My old 2015 STI, which was a dog by the way, was way for fun and engaging to drive.

I can't wait for my new 600+hp, AWD M5

The acres of cheap shitty plastic across the top of the dash are horrible, it continues on the centre console and on the door cards. Apart from the width of the car that picture could well be an A1 or A3 interior.

The build quality is fine, the dash and buttons won't fall apart or anything, but the ambiance is utter rubbish. 5/6/7 can have full leather dash, centre console and door cards and they look and feel so much better because of it.
