DIY Painted Engine Cover
A few hours of spare time over a few days and a small change is complete. A few blemishes, but good for DIY and being under the hood.
White base, ghost blue pearl in the clear, and Azurite Black M.

What type of white base and clear did you use?
It looks good but will most likely yellow over time. |

High temp white base (rattle can) and a good automotive clear (spray gun).

Tape them off really. I taped off the stripes only as I was color changing the M anyway. I had no patience to tape everything off and like only the M logo being the center of attention. Hand painted the M in my Azurite Black touch up paint.

Do I need special paint or could I use high temp primer as the base and then paint it with Silverstone Metallic that isn't high temp?

I’m certainly no expert and this was my first try at such a project but here are my steps:
Masked off the tri-colored bars next to the “M”. This masking remains until the very end. Didn’t mask the “M” because I wanted this black. After lots of sanding of entire cover with 600 and 1000 grit, cleaned with 91% alcohol. Be sure to sand in every tiny crevice. I used Duplicolor Adhesion Promotor Primer Clear 3 coats. Sit overnight. Then I used this https://www.ebay.com/itm/Custom-Auto...r=431959850718 Really good match I think. Lots of light coats and 2000 grit wet sanding to make it nice and even. Masking to paint the gloss black on top of the Sakhir Orange...pain in the butt for the letters. Wait overnight and then 3 coats of Duplicolor Ceramic Engine Paint Clear. Then more wet sanding and BOOM! Done! Enjoy! P.S....After each spray, I covered with a box to prevent garage dust from sticking to the drying surface. I also waited longer than advised (around an hour and overnight) between coats to allow for better curing.. I think that all in, cost about ~ $55. |
