Has my M4 been tuned?
Hi all,
Been a member quite a few years but recently purchased an M4 coupe. The sport displays show an increased BHP reading and some research suggests it shows higher than standard when it’s been tuned. What does the collective experience here think has been done to my car It was not mentioned by the dealer and I’ve not been able to contact previous owner. Standard exhaust except black tips. Cheers Jon

Yes, it's been tuned. Guessing it was not a BMW dealer. Perhaps they did not know.
Depending on how you feel about this knowledge, I'd think you'd be within your rights to ask them to either return the car or have it inspected by BMW. Personally, I wouldn't want a car that had been tuned by a previous owner. You have no idea how well they did or how the car was treated. |

I bought it 3 weeks ago so within the time frame to return but I only realised today when I changed the sport display to BHP from KW. It did say 480kw so a quick look and I assumed it was standard. Jon

Didn’t realise at first as there was a decent gap between arch and tyre. Spacers were black on black wheels so also not spotted when viewing.

Bm3 Stage 1 was updated on 19/10/20, sports displays were recalibrated to what you're showing. Pretty poor of the guy not to put it back to stock. Your BM dealer will have to look into it further as just plugging their comp into your car won't throw up the BM3 tune. |

I'm wobbling as only had it 3 weeks and may reject car. Trouble is it took me ages to find one this well spec’d. Such low mileage as well. Jon

That's fair, but keep in mind that a "yes, it was flashed with" whatever tune doesn't necessarily mean it is still flashed. Also, it's possible something else was used to tune it and a "no" from them wouldn't be definitive.

Still worth it. Someone else just stated that's what the flashed gauges look like so there's an excellent chance its still flashed. And if they are willing to share what tunes were downloaded etc, that's a plus.

Take the advice and contact Halim at BM3. Tell your dealer you suspect the car has a tune and why would the sports displays be showing what they are if it did not. Is it an AUC motor, if so your laughing.

I’ve emailed my vin to bm3 customer services with a summary.
Will let you know what they come back with either way.

It being flashed isn't necessarily a bad thing. You can still have it inspected by a certified mechanic to just make sure nothing is ticking, no knocks, doesn't sound like a spun bearing, or even spun hub and the timing is off. They will check to make sure the diff and trans is operating properly as well. If there is already a BM3 tune on it then maybe Halim or Dezeno will email the original owner and get him to transfer the tune package into your name. There is all sorts of ways to handle this and look at it.
If the car checks out mechanically and you want to keep it tuned then you are already thinking about correcting the crank hub issue. If it is certified or you have an extended warranty and you find out it is flashed then you have a decision to make and what type of risk you want to take. Good luck, beautiful car!

Thanks for all the advice
Bm3 has been back in touch asking for proof of ownership etc so I have sent them the requested documents and I’m awaiting a reply. Will keep you posted on developments. Jon
