+1. I made the decision to run 0W40 for the same reason after doing some research on different viscosities and the "FE" vs "non-FE" oil variants, but still meeting the LL-01 spec. I have been running the BMW M specific 0W40 oil for all of my oil changes (both dealer and my interim oil changes at 5k miles) ever since I bought the car 2.5 yrs ago - just did my 40k mile oil change a few weeks ago. Even though BMW no longer offers the M specific 0W40 oil, you can still find it as many dealers still have some "hiding" deep in their parts storage rooms...

So it should be LL01 5W30?
Go to Walmart, they are always running specials on oil for the 5 qt jugs, Pennzoil 1101 ws $23 last 2 weeks ago and get the indidual quartz from any wholesale club or amazon.

just fyi, my buddy who's a tech at a bmw dealership in socal says that f82's should run 5w-30 otherwise we risk the chance of vanos faults and cause some damage.

Your buddy is wrong as there are numerous grades covering the LL01 and LL01FE specs all of which work perfectly fine. I have yet to hear of a single case of an engine related issue due to the type of oil.

You gotta look at n55 engines as well, as the vanos and valvetronic systems are identical. They're having a lot of eccentric shaft/cam bearing ledge issues due to OCI's being too long and using oil that doesn't hold up. The S55 doesn't have the length of production for issues over time yet.

S55 engines use 0w-40 in the northeast weather conditions. You can purchase either Penszoil or Castro's European formula for around $23 for a 5 qts jug. And get the rest single quarts from either BJs or tour local Costco.
