M3 CS vs 991.2 Turbo S

To start, I know both of these vehicles are in different classes. Each serves its purpose spectacularly in my opinion. I considered a 570S and a 488, but I prefer to remain under the radar and avoid attention. These two cars are sleepers in their respective classes. Most people here in Austin metro can't distinguish (fortunately) between an M340 and a CS; same with a base 911 Carrera (if they even know what a 911 is) and a Turbo S. That's the exact reason I opted for these two vehicles. A huge bonus is the reliability and relative lower cost maintenance of the Porsche over the 488, Huracan and 570.

CS: less tech, but BMW functionality outperforms any same generation Porsche in my opinion. Maybe I'm not familiar enough with Porsche yet (first P-car), but time will tell. For example, I can change songs from the steering wheel on the CS, but can't on the TTS; cruise control is much simpler to use on the CA, and so on. Maybe I just haven't discovered how yet. Since he CS is a lease, I worry much less about any potential damage or theft, making it a great daily. With the TTS, I find myself sitting near windows in restaurants so I can keep my eye on it, take 20 minutes to find parking and change spots 3 times until I find the right one, and keep thinking about how it's doing parked outside.

TTS: no HUD, which I'm adapting to. I primarily use the HUD for monitoring my speed and speed limit changes since I use CarPlay, so it not a dealbreaker. CarPlay is flawless on the TTS, poor on BMW, probably because it uses WiFi. Technology is more than sufficient for me, though some owners wished it had more. One notable improvement is the ventilated seats. Phenomenal. My F85 vented seats were hit or miss; the X3M and M5C I tested also did not have functional vented seats. TTS vented seats are used on the very drive and work instantaneously. Visibility is also better in the CS, obviously, since the TTS is a cab.

Performance: not a fair comparison for obvious reasons. The CS suspension is stiff, which I prefer. Adaptive suspension is not really adaptive in my opinion. Pretty much always stiff. TTS with PDCC is mind blowing. Soft as an X5 or as stiff and dialed in as any other exotic in its class depending on driver preference. PDK is also on another level. I love the DCT, but the PDK blows it out of the park; DCT can be clunky and laggy at times, but the PDK is flawless. Steering is much stiffer in the CS, but I'm not sure if it's artificial or not; I prefer stiffer steering response, but the TTS does stiffen up perfectly when needed. Overall handling goes to the TTS though because of rear engine and etc. turbo lag, haven't noticed it on the TTS, it just pulls hard all the way to triple digits. CS lags from a standstill the first two or three seconds then pulls like a monster. Not as fast as the TTS, but it's not supposed to. CS limits come much sooner than the TTS's. Still haven't been able to reach its limits since it just improves while you drive more "spiritedly" as opposed to the CS, where it becomes somewhat unstable at certain limits. Braking is also on an entirely different level. Perhaps it's the CCBs, but the TTS stops with minimal effort regardless of urgency or speed.

Overall: love driving the CS (minus the ridiculous creeks inside the cabin) as a daily, but jumping in the TTS on the weekends is thrilling. They each serve their purpose extremely well and make a great combo. I may have missed a few things so please feel free to ask if anyone has any questions.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pictures:

Nice write up, beautiful stable. Hope we can all enjoy a P car and BMW in the same garage at some point in our lives.

I'm not great when it comes to cars, can't match some forum members that do better than professional reviewers, but I tried to at least cover the basics from my perspective.

I hope so too. It took a lot of hard work and countless nights to get here. I deploy 9 months out of the year so I want to enjoy the little time I spend back home.

Good luck to you brother.

Nice car. That red roof/red interior is a classic Porsche scheme and looks awesome on yours

I faced the same decision a few months ago and went 570s. Mainly because I already have a 911 and wanted to get McLaren "out of my system".

A few months in and it's much more of an event to drive than a Porsche (I understand you're trying to avoid this, so you made the right choice for you). It also seems more fragile than a 911 (warranty work had to be done within a month of ownership) and build quality/fit and finish is so much better on the 911.

Performance is about the same, but the McLaren feels lighter, livelier and the chassis and steering are much more communicative. On the other hand, the Porsche felt completely planted on the road

Haha exactly! All cars I cross shopped were tempting because they were great cars, but different strokes for different folks. I have no doubt the 570's performance is superb! I can understand why you switched. I might be feeling the same way when the time comes to upgrade from the TTS!

Ahh ok. Is the TTS nomenclature new since the base 911 is turbo now? When I see TTS I think of an Audi.

Making the TTS reference all the more confusing

Didn't mean to derail the thread. Just never seen that reference before.

That's a sweet combo, man. congrats.

Think the 991 will be the value-performance sweet spot for some time. 992 can't be an advancement like the 991 to the 997, doesn't introduce anything particularly game-changing. I do like that 992 rear light styling though...

Wouldn't hesitate to jump into any 991 right now, or especially once the 992 are in showrooms.

Completely agree! Which is why I jumped on it once my buddy gave me a great deal! This is a weekend drivers car so as long as it had the essentials (technology) I was content. 992 will be even better, for sure, but not a significant enough improvement, as you stated since all the important tech owners wanted already exists in the 991.

I have not driven the 992 yet, but the numbers I have seen so far the S outperforms the outgoing 991.2 GTS and that’s a whole lot of performance no matter which way you slice it (1/4 mile low 11s with a 126 mph trap and a 7:25 Ring lap on basic summer tires with 440 hp is nothing but remarkable given that very low hp figure).
The 991 generation as a whole was/is a game changer and I still don’t think anyone has been able to match the cohesive package it offers - the 992 take it up a few notches. I can guarantee the new turbo and more so the GT2/3 are going to bring more and then some.
That said, the 992 is is even more expensive and is even more of a GT car than the 991/991.2 are.

Of course. Porsche always improves the newer generations.

@Paliknight, To change songs, use the steering wheel right side control ball to get to the audio screen on the dash LCD. Press the right scroll ball and your playlist should appear. You can use the scroll ball to select songs.

That doesn't work with CarPlay audio right?

Do you happen to know how I can get the Porsche connect app up and running like bmw connected? It says contact dealership but dealership said I have to come into the service sept so they can activate it!

Service has to do it for some reason. I don’t have the multi-function wheel in my current 991.2 but frankly don’t recall in my two previous cars bc I didn’t use. CarPlay that much.

Thanks for serving and congrats on the cars.

Agree with your write up. TT are fun, especially when you get them via friend deals.

My $.02 on the CS would be to switch it to cup 2 tires if you haven’t already. That platform needs all the tire you can provide to get the power to the ground

Yes these stock MPSS are pretty horrible. Especially when comparing to the AWD in the TTS. I already have 10k miles on them lol so I'm probably switching to cup 2's soon
