Yes, the high mark is the top of that yellow piece (the flat part) and the low mark is the bottom of that yellow piece (the flat part). Your level looks fine. And yes, all you need is standard 50/50 BMW coolant, the same stuff that you use in the engine coolant system. However, for just a quick top up, using distilled water is fine.

One other thing you can do to get a good level is also run the self bleeding procedure for the charge air cooling system as well. It basically runs the electric pump for approx 8 min, forcing all of the air out of the system if there is any in there. That procedure can be seen here: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...eck/1VnYEaDgul

This is what mine looks like (2018 M3 with 6,000 miles):

Does anyone know why it leaks? Is there a part failing somehow. This issue seemed to have come out of left field with suddenly a bunch of people reporting it.

'18 12.5K miles, 16 months old

Checked for the first time. Haven't driven it in about 5 days. My car sits on a very slight incline. Level was near the bottom of the measurement or first/second ridge. Temps in the 50s to 60s.

Most likely because hardly anyone checks it since I would guess people would not expect it to leak and also not throw and error if it did leak.

It’s also very hard to check as it’s in the middle of the engine and you have to look straight down.

Anyone try EOS charge air cooler? Looks like pretty good construction and price.

Evolution of speed parts are quality from what I've read and a few buddies buying their port injection kits.

On another note, the test for this is:

Have your car idle/do a few pulls and touch the charge air cooler, is it cold? You're good. Is it burning hot? Yours is leaking.

A small hand mirror and a flashlight works just fine or just take a picture with your phone. That's what I did.

I think I saw your post during a cursory search after these issues kept popping up. We’re there any issues with your engine or was replacing the IC all that was needed?

They got the billet cooler with cast air tanks at a more normal price

I've been reaching out to shops and everyone seems to say CSF is the most proven product. May go down this direction if my core starts leaking.

A lot of shops mistake "most proven" and "these vendors pay me to sponsor their products". I'm not specifically saying that about CSF, but something to watch out for in general. I know quite a few shops who I'm close with the owners (and this is not to bash this company) sell "Fuel-It!" products but say they're the most garbage/rip off products for the platforms. The forums are a great tool to see other companies and their products. I do agree that CSF is a quality product, but I wouldn't discredit other companies. CSF/VF was one (if not the first from what I remember) to make the coolers, so they're getting all the fingers pointed at for the go-to. Lots of other reputable companies to choose from which can save you some $ at the end of the day.

I have no doubt in my mind that these products are all the same once they start using bar and plate heat exchangers. With that said, I think the CSF one is ugly compared to EOS, so I'm basing my choice on looks alone

So I put in some distilled water to the appropriate level yesterday at 530pm and this morning at 930 before heading to the dealer, it was low again.

Dropped it off at service so hopefully they will be able to figure it all out.

Fingers crossed!

They'll figure it out, hope you're covered under warranty otherwise that's a 2k repair.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but has anyone yet identified the root cause of this issue yet?

If fluid level is low or tank is dry, where are people finding the source of the leak(s)?

I don't want to throw parts at it, and to be quite honest, I want to retain my OEM components.

Thanks, y'all.

Are you referring to the core of the expansion tank or the core of the charge cooler?
