What is this whining sound?

F80 M3. Just started tonight after riding around for about an hour. No mods on the car yet. I've seen a number of theories for similar sounds.

Thank you both. Sure enough it's the valve cover. Dealership quoted me full price of $2400 due largely to 10 hours labor. Told him I was in CCA and they came down to around $1500. Would rather be tuning it with that but you have to pay to play I suppose.

Is it the cover or is it just the gasket?

It’s the Pcv valve, which is integrated into the VC.

Sweet, let's integrate it into the VC so when the little part goes you have to replace a $500+ part.

Yah, it’s stupid. I’m surprised no aftermarket option is available with a replaceable valve, maybe even a billet VC.

Happened on my gfs f80 a couple weeks ago. Replaced the valve cover ourselves. Around $600 for the part. Pretty easy to diy. Also replaced all the coils n plugs while we were at it. Had about 61k miles.

Do you have a link to a guide or video for the DIY instructions for replacing the Valve Cover?

Sounds like a boost leak? Check those charge pipes?

when the pcv valve starts to fail thats built into the valve cover. what you can do to test is open the oil cap when it's whining on idle . if it goes away, its the pxv valve/valve cover.

I guess I could add that now I'm having hesitation and misfires in 3rd and 4th under heavy acceleration and the good ole Drivetrain Malfunction and shuddering. It goes away after restarting the car. Was able to replicate it the next day. Have to be hitting it hard as it'll accelerate pretty nicely with no problem unless I really step on it. Got Bimmerlink and it showed misfires in several cylinders. Friend had this due to pinched fuel line coming out of the tank I think. Plugs and coil packs seems to be the primary suspect from what I read. I'm also smelling gasoline right over the fuel rail area and it fills my garage. I do wonder if it's any coincidence that this started happening after they replaced the valve cover. One guy had oil dripping down on belt and that caused it to slip. Any thoughts?
