Hit a pothole - $7.5k in damages

So Friday night was doing work at one of our data centers in nj. On the way home hit an enormous pot hole.

Drove on tire a bit to get of the highway. Both front and rear wheels destroyed. Cracked bumper and scratched rocker panel.

It's in the shop at the moment. How much can I expect this to diminish my vehicles value? For most part there does not appear to be any suspension damage but they will evaluate closer when they begin the work.

They are giving me new bumper, 2 new wheels, rocker panel, fender liner and doing alignment. All oem parts. Oh also replacing all 4 tires due to wear.

Here is the wheel that took hardest hit:

By chance you have pictures of this epic pothole too? Like the Moby Dick of potholes man.

That's insane, but glad to hear you're ok. That bad of damage makes me think immediately after hitting that pothole you'd likely lose control of the car. Or did you hit the pothole which blew the tire and you drove on it to get to the shoulder and that's what ripped up the tire sidewall? That's what it looks like to me.

Edit - Yeah the wheel doesn't look cracked, though certainly some nice chunks are missing from it. Looks like you hit the pothole, tire blew, drove on it for a little bit to get out of the way and the sharp edges where the wheel are grabbed onto the tire and ripped up the sidewall and caused it to deform like that. Sucks to hear and see that but glad you're doing ok there, hopefully it gets fixed up quick.

Holy hell...

Sorry to hear about the damages. I hit a pothole with my e55 while back and I filed a claim with the city vs insurance. After a while insurance ended up winning and the city reimbursed everything...

Just a thought ...

Yea i hit it, it blew, and i drove it a bit to get out the danger zone. The wheel was screwed already anyway so i was not gonna stop in the middle of a highway at 5am in the morning. I dont have a pic as i drove away but it was a deep one thus the bumper and rocker damage.

If that were an e36 the strut would have shot through the hood. not kidding. Amazing how far these M3s have come. You should not loose much value from a pothole unless the chassis is tweaked.

I attempted to go this route, PA laws basically have an indemnity clause that doesn't hold them liable for road conditions unless, I'm paraphrasing here, they're given ample prior notice to the road conditions. When I spoke with PennDOT, they snidely told me "good luck" when I put in a claim.

potholes in New Jersey will seem more like tank traps if you come here from a normal State, so we see that kind of damage all the time.
but then, just to really mess with us, when the geniuses that run this State get around to repairing the holes they fill them with Cold Patch. every time a truck hits one of these repairs the aggregate in the patch explodes like freaking buckshot with the predictable results to the front of your car.

Same shit happened to me in another car I owned in the past where the city was responsible. A raised manhole cover destroyed by transmission. Went through insurance. Insurance then sued the city and got them to reimburse them. I was not out of pocket any money.

Thats insane. Sorry to hear about that. Hopefully you don't take too much of a hit. I'm assuming its going through insurance? Do they classify it as an accident or just a general claim?

Assuming it shows on vehicle history report, which it probably will, my best guess is 10% - 20% vs. similar car without that previous damage. Just a guess.

Where was the pothole?

Jersey and New York City are disgusting. DOT gets away with millions of dollars in annual damages every year.

The worst... there was a year that (not in the M) i replaced 6 tires over the course of the winter due to potholes on the LIE.

There is some improvement though - the city seems to be pretty responsive if you submit a pothole report on the 311 mobile app. Usually gets resolved in a day or two and they also send you a status update once it is done (or a reason why it may take longer, e.g. con ed project that dug up a hole or something).

File a claim with the city/county and make them cover all your damages. No way they can deny it.

idk if I'm too young to know how roads were paved so someone correct me if I'm wrong. But just taking off the top layer and relaying asphalt is just a band-aid. These roads need to be either regraded or the "subroad? needs to be level. But I heard this "new" technology of paving guarantees the road for another 10 years...just push off the problem onto someone else lol. Just wait for the next freeze in NJ these roads will crack open and show their faults. It seems like the government lives paycheck to paycheck..idk. Cop told me to drive into a 6 inch deep crater because my left rear tire kissed the lane... ITS THE LAW!!!!!!

Sorry that happened to you OP. Thats wild damage tho man. gotta go get a pic of the hole or tell where it happened.

don't worry about resale unless you are going to keep your car under 50k and thats a stretch. After that accidents and what have you prices kind bottom out. the car will be worth what its worth. Like most fourm members youll likely keep good records; but finding a buyer who wants something that clean or w/e will be tough. and by resale time youll have to take a hit; but with proper documentaton itll be a quick sell.

Sorry to hear that. That picture is horrifying for just the damage by pothole. Glad you are okay. I have seen several incidents with potholes in NJ, especially at night. Damn.
