Anyone burning oil at the track?
I've got the Twin Turbo Power LL-01 from post break in 0w30. Planning on using other motor oil after one more track day.
Two track days and I've lost about a quart. Consistent with what you guys experienced? Any recommended motor oils to swap with? Thinking of red line. |

I didn’t burn any
I thought s55 needed 5w40? I think your problem is the 30 weight. I’ve always observed my cars burned more when it was a 30 weight instead of 40 weight. Especially many of the 30 weight like Mobil 1 sheared down easily |

Interesting. I'm running stock tune and the first oil post break-in. Maybe the tech didn't fill it up completely and I only burned a very minor amount.
Either way, it looks like I'm within normal range of oil loss per 2,500 mi according to BMW. Going to top it off before Limerock and see what happens after the weekend. |

I burn about one quart of oil per 3-4 track day with my M4cs and my previous 2015 M4 was exactly the same. They also did not consume a single drop of oil in the off season. Some oil burn is to be expected with a lot WOT running on a turbo engine.

Actually, the recommended oil for the S55 is now 0W-30 since BMW switched to Penzoil. It used to be 0W-40 when they were with Castrol. The 5W-30 is only cited as an acceptable alternative. Dealers default to using the generic/bulk 5W-30 on our cars under the free maintenance program to save on cost. I always specify that I want the M-Power 0W-30 oil to be used and my dealer has always happily complied.

I never had any issues of burning oil; car about 20k miles and I didn't drive it on track for past two years until this season though. Hoping the same for the future.
My F30 N26 motor had issues and actually blew the motor though but different car |

My 2015 M4 has 43k miles, last month on a 3 day track weekend I went through 1/2 quart of 5-40 Castrol over about 500 track miles. My car will usually consume less than 1/4 quart every 2k normal street miles.

Oops, yes, I had the 0W-30 and 0W-40 reversed. I fixed my OP.
From my 2019 owner's manual:

As far as I know, both the 0W-30 and 0W-40 oils are ///M specific grades and the change is only related to the switch from Castrol to Penzoil. The 5W-30 is the generic non-M oil grade that dealers have in bulk.

What's all this talk about oil burning and frequent changes? Trackdays, daily driving, and dealership oil changes whenever it tells me to (10k intervals).

LL-01 spec had a minimum hths requirement of 3.5 while LL01FE is only a 3.0 requirement. Its a move to less engine protection for a gain in fuel efficiency. Most oem's are recommending much thinner oil now (usually 0w30 or 0w20) in order to meet fuel efficiency standards. The s55 though was originally spec'd for either LL-01 or LL-01FE oils. Over the last few years the dealers stopped stocking the LL-01 oils (5w30 and 0w40 grades) and began to only stock the newer oil specs (0w30 and 0w20 grades). So if you go to a dealership now for oil service you will certainly get an LL01FE oil. However, you certainly can still use an LL-01 oil if you prefer something a little heavier (I use Castrol 0w40 in my M3). |

Once BMW went turbo on M cars there were no more M specific oil grades. M cars now take the same oil as other non-M BMWs. Prior generation M cars did require the M specific 10w60 though.

I have a suspicion that 0w30 making it into S55 is a cost savings move, and as the poster above mentioned, a fuel efficiency move. |
