CPO on request. Is this legit?

I have seen that there are some lease return pre-owned M4s (low mileage with 1200 miles service) which are not-CPO but when I inquired about their CPO status, the BMW dealership is willing to make the car CPO but only if I agree on purchase with an increase on the price by 3-4K.

First of all I want to ask if making a CAR CPO after purchase agreement is legit? Dealerships always tell me that they can sell non-CPO cars fast.

Secondly, if they make the car CPO after the purchase agreement, what kind of proof they can provide me to ensure the BMW CPO status.

Thanks

Ive never seen that.

Is this one particular dealership saying that? I wonder if he's just saying yes, then selling you an extended warranty.

I recently got an extended warranty call and they mentioned how they're a client for BMW. It was a company called Car Guard. Didn't go with them cause there was very limited info online about them

This is after you already bought the pre-owned car or before you close the purchase? They can CPO something you want to buy as a CPO before it is sold even if originally listed as non-CPO (assuming it meets criteria).

It costs the dealer around that price (roughly $4k) to CPO Warranty the car and they are simply letting you know and passing the cost onto you. Alternatively would have otherwise just baked it into the price of the car and CPO'd it.

Perhaps they're seeing a stronger demand for non-CPO and figuring it's not worth it on their end to CPO it.

This is before I close the purchase. 55K non-CPO and 59K with CPO. Car has 1 year factory warranty left.

I did this with mine because I wanted to purchase the BMW factory extended warranty (not a third party one) and BMW only offers that on CPO vehicles.

I believe in the purchase agreement it will state it's a BMW CPO vehicle or something along those lines.

The vehicle as is would have passed our government safety standards for brakes and tires but the CPO requirement meant I needed new tires, brakes and services caught up that weren't completed. Tires and brakes alone are over $4000, hence the increased cost.

Is it worth it? It was for me because I really wanted the extended warranty. I think they only dinged me an extra $1500 or so because I was buying the extended warranty. With that said, now that I've recieved the warranty paperwork, I wouldn't do it again. They pretty much only cover the engine and tranny (as long as it's not modified or raced) and they have a language in the contract to essentially decline ever other type of repair. Any type of modification can be used as a basis to void the warranty an entire section of the car. If I use lowering springs, anything suspension related they immediately void the warranty on.

4K for an extra year warranty is a lot especially if the car had low miles to begin with, unless you're expecting to drive a lot.

It happens enough where it is not a red flag. The dealer is trying to advertise the car at an attractive price and they can't do that by CPOing the car. It is much easier to add it on per customer request.

My suggestion is to see if they offer any warranties that will match the CPO. My dealer sells CNA, which is cheaper than BMW's warranty and offers more coverage. I would see what type of aftermarket warranty the dealer sells for $4k and how it compares to CPO.

When I was shopping for my M3 this is what most of them were like and its completely normal. They advertise the price non cpo as it is much lower. plus BMW has rules and standards that must be met for a car to get a CPO tag. It does cost the dealership money - a few thousand dollars depending which package and years and miles you get. I think it's worth it so when I bought my 2017 M3 I had them CPO it and purchased an extra 3 years of warranty through BMW as it has a KM limit. The unlimited mileage extra years are through a third party company however from what I was told BMW owns the company so its neither here nor there.

It's legit. it costs dealers to CPO a car so sometimes they just rather not do the ones that are eligible, specially on very low mileage cars. you just have to make a financial decision as it is worth it.

A CPO car will register with BMWNA and can be repaired in any dealership in the States. You can call BMWNA and ask them if it is CPO.

Personally, I would not buy a 2017 with 1 yr left for $55K and pay an extra $4K for 1 more year @$59K. You can find plenty of 2018's with 2 years left in that range, in fact you can find a CPO 2018 in that price range.

You may not be looking for a 6 Spd, but I know there was a MW/SO 2018 ZCP 6 Spd with 4K miles and 2.5 yrs of warranty left in the FS section. I almost pulled the trigger before finding my Tanzanite Blue M3

Agreed. They seem to have this priced as a 2018. I'd keep looking OP

This is precisely why dealers are opting not to CPO the M cars. The cost to benefit ratio is not there. But like the OP's situation, they are happy to CPO an otherwise eligible car if the buyer wants it and will pay for it.

I doubt it costs dealers 4K to CPO.

I bought my 2018 last Oct and having it be CPO'd was a must. The sales associate initially tried to pass on their full cost to me which was less than 2k if I remember correctly.

Ended up only paying 250 for it in the end.

You made them CPO the car before the purchase?

I made it clear that having them CPO the car would seal the deal, then took their lead.

They said they could make it happen if I covered their cost. After further negotiation, we got down to me paying 250 and they absorb the rest.

Never hurts to ask!

I was looking at 2018's quite awhile before buying mine and NEVER saw a 2018 with an April 2017 in service date, earliest I saw was like October... I don't doubt you, but just recommend double checking or holding out for a 'newer' 2018

You can buy an extended warranty for a lot less than 4K a year. From BMW

Yeah that was surprising to me as well. I reviewed the car fax and confirmed the in-service date. It's a single owner lease return. They have it listed for 54K (non-CPO). I gave them an offer of 55K with CPO. Let's see !! Otherwise I will look in to a "newer" 2018.

I suspect that is a 2017. 2018 production started later in the year. Best case that car is missing some goodies that came out with July 2017 production.
