Need Help w/ F80 Purchase!

Hi All - I am brand new to these forums as a member but I have been reading for a while. I've read the rules and I searched for a place to put this post - but this section seemed the most fitting.

I am looking to purchase a used F80 and I have recently shipped one from California to Arizona through Carmax. I completely understand Carmax is overpriced but the 5 year warranty is what is drawing me in the most.

The question I have is if it is simply way too overpriced.

The car in question is $55k "no-haggle"
- 2016 "very good" condition
- Mineral white
- Sakhir Orange Interior (not full leather)
- no packages, carbon roof, DCT
- 19's w/ new PSS
- 18k miles with clear carfax, regular maintenance, etc. (due diligence done)

Would love any opinions on this matter. It's essentially the exact car I want besides its majorly lacking in packages such as executive + LED.

Thank you all for your time.

Year, condition? More info is needed. A link to the CarMax post would help. Note, buying the 5 year MaxCare would push that 55K upwards to 60K or more making this "deal" depending on the year and condition...not worth it. You might as well buy new.

Get an e92 with a MaxCare.

Thanks for the response - the link is provided here!

The warranty is around $2,200 for 5yr/75k (I know I won't be driving over 10k miles a year likely) - making this deal a little more enticing.

The Pricing/Ordering forum would likely be more help but I'm sure this will get moved.

This guy is in a similar situation. I'd look at that thread.

It doesn't seem like a good deal, and I wouldn't worry about the warranty...you can buy your own extended warranty and still come out ahead of that price.

CarMax is fine, but not perfect and you can still run into issues with the car as with any pre-owned purchase. I would want to have an independent dealer do a PPI. There are PLENTY of cars out there, don't feel like you have to jump on this one.

Thanks for the response. I will be getting an inspection on the car - I've just understood that the best warranties come from BMW themselves or aftermarket for Carmax. I've done nationwide searches on M3's and no dealers are holding a similar model (besides 2017-2018)

It’s an ok deal without the maxcare. With the maxcare I think you’d be better off buying new. IMO maxcare isn’t worth it on something this new. As I said, I’d probably use maxcare on something like an e92 or an older sports car more prone to breaking down. This car still has a manufacturers warranty so CarMax still wins as maxcare is redundant.

If I recall, it’s not as long, or not as many miles compared to when he bought his infamous Range Rover. They’ve also made the warranties a little more expensive (allegedly)

CARMAX warranty is worth every penny. It works, and you can take your car to the dealer, and they will honor it. You just have to pay the deductible.

As all aftermarket warranties, as long as you read the fine print, and is exclusionary (meaning they only list what is not covered, everything else is covered). Carmax typically will not cover cosmetics and maintenance items.

That said, the F8X platform is rock solid, and there are very few issues reported on this platform, particularly a car this new.

It depends on your tolerance for risk. Folks that are risk averse, prefer to have the peace of mind of an aftermarket warranty like Carmax. Others prefer to put the money away, and save it for a rainy day.

On this particular car, it is equipped with a DCT transmission. That would be the only thing to give me pause - long term.

I would get the Carmax coverage and enjoy the car, if you plan on keeping it for a while (I don’t know if Carmax warranty is transferable). Car is a 2016, it may have 1 1/2 or 2 years left on factory warranty, which would be fine if you keep the car for only 2 years.

Lots of factors....

I think having the packages you want is important. The only difference might be if the car was super clean (sounds like it is) and super cheap (sounds like it isn't).

If its damn close to what you want in options AND it has the 5 year warranty, then the price is not bad at all.

I really do appreciate everyone’s input! Thanks for the replies, especially around this time. I think I’m going to go ahead and pull the trigger on it.

Will keep everyone updated if I welcome a new f80 home .

It looks like they CPOed the car so there's an extra year and unlimited miles warranty. With zec and zcp it looks like a sweet deal for the price. I'd buy it if it was black and in manual.
