Sorry i am not buying it. I don't see how on earth Bmw (or any car manufacturer) would somehow be responsible for an inexperienced driver causing an accident. It just doesn't make any sense. There is no way that is the reason that there is a recommended break in period.

If car manufactures were worried about getting sued for a car crash they would limit the ECU to control revs, boost, top speed. etc. Yet a brand new Dodge Charger with less than 30 miles on the ODO will hit 154mph- tested and proven.
- In addition many cars are sold CPO. A brand new driver could be getting a M4, Hellcat, Corvette that is well past the OEM suggest break in period. So I don't buy any part of the suggestion that a break-in period is for a new owner. |

Here's a good video talking about engine break-in:

Guys on youtube VS multi million dollar companies with large research facilities, labs, and employees with PhD in metal, oil, engineering. The youtube video "oil looked the same". How about a used oil lab result. They checked the engine after 1000 miles. I manufactures run tests well into the 100,000 mile range. In addition the video testing was done in nice warm southern CA. Again I would assume manufactures vary testing from the hottest to the coldest possible owner conditions. The new car buyer in Maine ,during a cold snap, will have different operating conditions than southern CA.

The M4 GT4 was built on the same production line as the M4 so I guess that meant race teams that spent $200k had to follow the same S55 1200 mile soft break-in interval
BTW, GT4 S55 engines are not rebuilt/refreshed frequently so don’t suggest frequent rebuilds as the justification for a hard vs. soft engine break-in. |

while I'm not optimistic that this will change the views of the diehards, I thought I'd post it anyway for those with open minds who might be interested. these two segments are a small excerpt from a lengthy article that appeared on the PCA forum about three years ago. the article is from a regular contributor to that forum and describes a recent factory tour. The conversation excerpted here is between Mr. Koop and a person described as a factory chief engineer, and occurred during a Q&A near the end of the tour.
each screen shot is large so I've separated them into subsequent posts. |

I disagree. It's not DIRECTLY a legal issue, but it's an "out" for them to deny a warranty claim. They deny claim, customer takes them to court for breach of contract (or whatever it might be called in English), and BMW now has an argument in court for why it wasn't the car's fault.

Interesting thread and lots of “internet theories” but why people would not just follow the factory recommendations and play it safe from a warranty standpoint is bizarre to me. Other than the fact we are all hot rods at heart if we bought these types of cars so hard not to floor it out of the gate that’s for sure. Just be safe out there.
