Hey guys so I finally got my car back!

So far, the metallic tapping noise is not present during my first cold start (3 hours parked about 25 degrees outside)

" HYDRAULIC OIL CONTROL VALVE FAULTY CAUSING LIFTERS TO
BE NOISY AT COLD START UP VERIFIED COMPLIANT WITH SHOP
FOREMAN. TAPPING NOISE WOULD GO AWAY WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF
STARTING ENGINE. HOOKED UP CHARGER TO PERFORM SHORT TEST.
FOND NO FAULTS. SENT FASTA.
WITH VIDEO OF NOISE FROM CUSTOMER.
UNPLUGGED HYDRAULIC OIL CONTROL VALVE AND START ENGINE IN
MORNING COLD START ONCE AGAIN. AFTER UNPLUGGING VALVE NOISE
DID NOT RETURN. AS PER PUMA CASE REPLACED HYDRAULIC OIL
CONTROL VALVE AND ALL LIFTERS. PERFORMED YET ANOTHER COLD
START IN 20 DEGREE WEATHER. NO FURTHER NOISES HEARD. ROAD
TESTED. OK (PUT 5 GALLONS OF FUEL IN FOR ROAD TEST) "

Of note, they also changed my oil 0w30.

I don't hear the metallic tapping sound at all, I just hear the valves in the head of the motor. I really hope this lasts a long time.

Here is the video of start up (about a minute of starting same conditions as before).

I think some people blow this kind of stuff a little out of proportion. My engine makes weird noises at startup too. My diff makes weird noises too. When I push my clutch in at low rpm it makes weird noises.

But that's just me I guess. Anyways, I'm glad to see you got it fixed! Beauty of a warranty

Could you provide the part number for the HYDRAULIC OIL CONTROL VALVE? Was it listed on your documents?

Thanks

I would have to agree. I told them not to wash it because I don't like how other people other than myself washing it. We are a crazy bunch but I'm still glad I got that done and now it's been really good few sub 20 degree starts later.

This loud ticking/metallic clicking noise happens about 1 minute after a cold start (usually overnight or at least 2 to 3 hours) This noise goes away when the car is fully warmed up.

Car: 2015 F80
Miles: 15K
Production date: 6/20/2015

2/23 Dropped off my car at the dealer

2/24 They couldn't exactly duplicate the problem - probably because by the time they drive it from a parking spot to the garage, the sound is gone, I sent my service advisor the video.

2/27 Asked my service advisor for an update: they are having someone from BMW NA come to check out the problem further

3/3 - I Just got news that they are replacing it with a new set of lifters. Should take about a week or so.

They gave me a 2017 mineral white 430 X drive gran coupe, which is nice but it's nothing like an M3. I miss my car so much!

Any of you having the same problem? Check out the video below.
Exact same noise, just noticed it this morning. March 2015 build. Or at least it got louder and caught my attention. Hate going to the dealer, especially for the "can't duplicate" nonsense.

Take a video and send it to your service advisor. A lot of members say it's normal and just to leave it alone also.

You sir are lucky. Everything still OK with the car?

I did my best to get this issue resolved but failed.
It was difficult to replicate in person and it took me 4(!) trips to the dealership, still felt like they had no clue. Whilst I was struggling with mine, yours was being fixed. I'm happy for you it got resolved so quickly, at that point I pointed out this thread helping them identify the problem. They contacted BMW Benelux.

BMW Benelux had a look and concluded nothing was wrong. So all I got is an email stating they took note of my complaint and found nothing wrong with the car. I asked what's causing the noise and BMW Benelux doesn't have the decency to reply.

The car has a MPE, indicating I'm willing to go the extra mile just for noise. But what the heck, they think all is good now? I fantasised crashing my car into that dealerships showroom and walk away.

All my previous cars have had that ticking sound. Some louder than others. Never had problems with any of the cars. I don't think it's a real issue.

My car is all good! No ticking noise at cold starts ( so far which is about 1000 miles). So many people say it's normal so I probably wouldn't worry too much about it. Most importantly your car runs fine! I know the feeling as it bothered me too!

I also have MPE at least you got a good sound to listen to too!

Now I have a different problem , passenger side door/floorboard is leaking/getting wet. So I don't have my car at the moment. I started a new thread about it.

@FirstF80InSpace, I know this issue is high up the list of first world problems, but I've driven diesels that ran smoother.

Meh, the engine sounds rough compared to a year ago (ticking, chain noise, ...), not something the MPE can overcome unless you floor it, ... officer.

They put 0w30 in my engine but maybe try 0w40? Perhaps that would help.

You might be on to something...
1st oil change was 0w40.
2nd oil change 5w30.
And now running on 0w30.

It's worth a try.

If you were local I'd help you change the oil!

Heres mine. This sound normal? It definitely seems weather dependent. Wasn’t as loud last week when the temps were in the high 60’s. Now that it’s in the 40’s definitely more noticeable.

pretty sure i have the same issue as the op, definitely a noise within the head. Im guessing this has something to do with a lifter? my car is modded so i'm not sure i'm gonna be able to get some dealer insight on my car :/

exhibit A... the hydraulic oil control valve lifter in question (pic from google):

i could not find a s55 reference on google, but it is the same part that was used on the old n55 engine (i think it's #1 in the image below):

does anyone know what the labor cost is for this part if out of warranty?
