i have a feeling this will give them a reason to pull anyone over more frequently and cite for other vehicle modifications despite the fact vehicle being pulled over is below 95db

I agree, but what can we do about it. Only way to combat that is to go to referee and get a certificate of compliance so that way when an officer walks up to you and states he stopped you for exhaust you show the paper and pretty much tell him to kick rocks.

Well to be fair it mentioned airplane at a certain distance, the jackhammer one thought at 90db it didn't mention a distance. But still, the fact that they can use an airplane as a reference at 100db is telling

referee is not an option for me.. i will def get the car tested for exact db, should be under 95.. print that bulletin and hope for the best if i get stopped lol. $ for CA is far more important than to protect and serve.

If it lets of firecracker or machine gun sounds that can be heard far away that might be louder than an aircraft. Someone should measure it.

So the process is worth noting, as I got a ticket a few years back. You get a ticket, then your court documents. Court document says you need to go to a state referee. Once there, they do an emissions test and db test. If you pass emissions and db test, bring that certificate to the court, case gets dismissed. You don’t need to go pre emptively.

The majority of everyone's modified exhausts on here are not close to that 95db limit
I think everyone is misunderstanding this. The db measurement is being taken 19 inches from the exhaust tip with engine at 3/4 of maximum rpm! Not 95 db at 50 feet like race tracks measure. Hardly any modified exhaust is going to pass, let alone many stock systems. I tested my supercharged jeep srt today at idle and it was 96db on start up and 88 after it came off cold start. If I even tapped the throttle it would blow way over 95db!

What if we have out of state plates? My car isn’t registered in the state of California so could I still be cited for exhaust?

Now imagine what those numbers would be if measured at 19 inches from the tip. That’s the required measurement distance per the law.

Excellent. Obnoxiously loud exhaust is an annoyance.

New California Exhaust Law

Anybody concerned about the new law California just rolled out making exhausts tickets a mandatory 1000 dollar fine and state ref. If chp starts to seriously enforce this i feel like the car scene will die here.
I also believe its violating the 8th amendment heavily. I received a speeding ticket for 85 in a 45 and it was half as much. A lot more dangerous than a loud muffler imo.

Any thoughts?

1 second Google search

"New California Law for 2019. As of January 1, 2019, a modified exhaust on an automobile or motorcycle, excessively loud, can no longer be cited as a correctable violation. Assembly Bill AB1824 has taken away the opportunity to correct the violation and requires a citation for such violation to result in a fine only. In many cases may also result in a trip to the Bureau of Automotive Repair B.A.R. If you feel your vehicle is grossly negligent in this area, removing resonators, deleting mufflers etc. You know who you are. Don't waste your hard earned money on this violation. Drive safe everyone."

Cliffs: New law says exhausts cant exceed 95dba and will be ticketed if they do

I guess the question is will they enforce it now that it's a fine, because they didn't enforce it before.

Fortunately, power does not equal noise. A car can be modded and fast without being loud.

Lots of these tickets are going to be easy to fight it seems like...

Unless a police officer inspects the car and shows that it is a deleted muffler or cat that is resulting in the loud noise he has no case.

For instance, my car is STOCK and a cop may think in his bias reasoning it is to loud. So what? Am i going to have to pay 1000 for a car that is completely stock from manufacture?! I think not.

Will be interesting how trigger happy police will be if they truly have been given the power to fine at there discretion regarding this matter.

Edit: just noticed message that says if the exhaust noise is above a certain dba. I suppose this makes more sense..
