First big problem with the M3 in 4.5 years/55k miles...

Finally happened. My first real "dig into the car and take it apart" issue. See below. It's been 4.5 years of spotless performance, 55k miles of pure driving pleasure, and now this.

What is that milky substance you ask? Why Milk of course.

And I'm glad to say I have confirmed for the rest of you how much milk you can spill in your trunk before it becomes an issue: a shitload.

That's 1/2 gallon of milk the drained from my trunk into that nice white storage container. At the top of the storage container are very nice drains directly to the exterior of the vehicle.

So what this revealed is it would take approximately 40 gallons of milk per minute to fill up that recessed area and overwhelm the drains before threatening those important electronics you see in the back of the pic.

You are all welcome. Glad I could share this important educational experience. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go trade this thing in before it gets warm.

The real problem will be the stench of rotten milk to follow coming from the trunk....

Solution: drill into the floor of that compartment for ease of fluid evac.

Honestly the trunk liner probably got about one ounce.I sopped it up as much as possible and sprayed it with 50/50 vinegar to aid the remainder's breakdown. It's organic - I just need to keep airflow up.

Since I have kids who spill milk, I've learned how to deal with this effectively.

God what a sad statement that is...

I notice that you refer to your car as a stripper.

So you’ve been spending the whole day trying to get all the milk out of a stripper, then

Several years ago some friends who owned a 1st gen X5 were on their way home from a Costco run where they bought several cases of bottled water. On the way home they got rear ended, pretty hard. No one was injured, but the bottles of water ruptured and soaked the trunk, burning out all of the electronics under the trunk floor. The repair bill was in the thousands, and the cost of fixing the electronics was higher than the body work.

I'm guessing that this was because you had a half gallon/gallon of milk loose in the trunk. I've installed Audi/VW grocery bag holders in three of our BMWs and all groceries go in plastic bags attached to these hooks.

Here's the DIY thread where I showed how to install one of these hooks in my M4. I literally just installed these hooks in my wife's M3 a week ago. Good news is that in the M3 there's room for two hooks, one on each side, just like the 335is that was her prior car.

So it was actually because I apparently put the milk too close to the latch when I slammed the trunk shut and pinched a bottom corner of the bag (trunk was packed).

Same thing happened to me but thankfully it was just water.

I thought you lusted after GTS's water injection, and decided to raise the bar with DIY milk injection mod ...

Moooooove over spinning crank hub, there's a new problem in M-Town. (See what I did there?)

On a serious note, there is no reason to cry over spilt milk. Worst case you could replace the interior trunk liner/carpet and get that new car smell back.

Thread title is misleading, car never gave you any problems, you gave the car problems!

In all seriousness though, I recommend keeping one or two coolers in the car. I don't really use them for thermo reasons, although that is a plus when I get cold items in the summer. What they REALLY do though is prevent spilling and broken eggs / bottles / containers. You will never have this issue again.
