Dct servicing
Hey guys. I purchased a 2014 m4 with 42000 miles on clock.
What do you think? Should i performed a dct change oil and differential oil change? If yes what have you guys using? Here our climate is really hot. About 35 to 40 celcius in summer time. |

You can't service the DCT.

Ciao from Italy! I spent several months in Cyprus in the summer of 2010. I do miss lazy days getting some sun on Nissi Beach.
The DCT is supposed to be a “lifetime fill”, so it should neve need servicing. The car is equipped with excellent heat exchangers to deal with hot climates and extended track use, so the fluid should be fine under normal conditions. Having gotten that out of the way, if you do decide to service it, the fluid is quite expensive. You can find DIY instructions on YouTube. |

Interestingly enough, i got my girlfriend a used 2015 M3 around Christmas with 50k miles. I took it to the dealer and asked for a transmission, differential, oil change and coolant flush. They couldn't do the DCT trans fluid because they said it's lifetime fill. But i took my M4 last week for a 24k mile service and was able to do the trans and diff service.

"Lifetime" is the reason BMW had such a terrible reputation starting with the E90. None of these fluids are lifetime. It's just BMWs way of getting around service costs while under warranty.

What is BMW's terrible reputation? First I have heard of this. Also, what specific fluid related issues have BMWs had since moving to the "lifetime" recommendation?

Rather than getting oil change every 5k miles, the computer would tell you oh, you're going till 12k, and BMW would say well the computer knows best. Then they say oh it's lifetime fluid. But by 50k the trans are driving like crap because the fluild isnt anything different, its the same stuff that they used before when they recommended a 50k service interval. So now you have a ton of high mileage cars that are gunked up and running poorly because BMW pushed out the service intervals.

Interesting, first I am hearing of these issues. But, the max maintenance inclusion BMW has offered has been 50k miles (now down to 36k I believe) so even if they recommended a 50k mile fluid change it would not be on their dime. So shifting to a lifetime recommendation doesnt affect BMWs wallet at all. As for oil changes, I think BMW is 10k miles across the lineup now which seems to be pretty universal among major auto makers.
Anyway, I am playing devils advocate here because I think a lot of what you are saying is conjecture unless you can point me to some sources that prove this out. I think BMW uses the term "lifetime" somewhat loosely as the vast majority of their customers will not keep a vehicle past 100k miles. |
