The chip shortages are the big thing, if this issue isn’t alleviated soon the shortages/price increases now are going to seem like nothing.

I’m so lucky I put together a new PC with all the top line components last April. The same machine that cost me $5k back then would probably be around $8k now. I was running RTX 2080tis in SLI, but I’ve removed one card and stored it away as they’re going for near $2k used on EBay right now! It’s insane what’s happening with prices right now on many consumer items. Even ancient 1080tis are over $1k now, it’s nuts!

This is spot on. I work for a major PC gaming manufacturer, and these shortages are causing serious havoc. Prices are going through the roof, and there's no real end in sight from my perspective. I'm not sure how the current situation impacts auto manufacturers vs. us on the more consumer/commodity side of things, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if the chip shortages serve to exacerbate the issue.

Thanks for the inside info, and thank you for creating the products that have been a big hobby of mine since the Radio Shack Tandy days and the 286!

Bought my F82 used a little over a year ago and I listed it for sale at the same price I paid after taxes and have people offering my asking price and one even 3k over it.

Same thing happened to my E92 M3. Bought it used in 2016, sold for the same amount I paid 2.5 years later. And that same car is now still worth the same amount 2 years later!

Knowing this, I'm most likely keeping the F82 for a few more years. Basically owning a car for free, however I can foresee a further 10% depreciation in 2-3 years before it bottoms out.

I looked into selling my F80 to Vroom. I received an offer today for 8.5% higher than I did from them 3 months ago.

Is this happening in Canada? I have been kicking tires and there's plenty of F82's for sale in the country and they seem to be selling slow as it's been the same 70+ cars for months. Certainly doesn't seem to be a hot market for them.

Here’s an interesting snapshot of the rising M4 prices from https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/price-trends/BMW-M4-d2258

Sitting in CarMax lobby at this very moment. I came here in October when the car had 2,000 less miles and they offered $51,000 flat. Today, their offer is $56,000! Carvana online yesterday (sight unseen) was $52,342.

Wow normally carmax is lower than carvana. Thats interesting. My guess carmax is willing to take a smaller profit to get the cars vs letting other dealers take them since they know how fast they sell.

I've seen there inventory show a few m4's nationwide then show 0, Same with the M3's, but the M3's are getting more money for sure since more M4's were sold. Its funny that this is the case because the M3 had a cheaper msrp, but thats the way supply/demand works.

Are you actually considering trading it in or just curious about the quotes?

I also noticed that carmax has a 2012 M3 coupe for 32,998 with 64k miles, im posting the link because im curious how fast this sells at its current price. It'll give us an idea of how the market is continuing to trend considering these are older models.

I purchased my 2018 F80 comp with approximately 17,5k miles for $55k in March, and traded in my 135is for $16k (at around 43k miles). In looking at the CarGuru price trend, I'm amazed that the 135is appreciated by about 5% from March. My f80 didn't appreciate by the same percentage, but I purchased it below the average price shown on Carguru (at about $58k).

So I just paid off my F82 (tax included), and I can still make a profit if I sell it right now. Interesting.

You may have been the poster that inspired me to go to all of them. Shift said “we cannot bid on your car. It may be too unique.” Vroom still hasn’t sent a response via email.

I just sold it LOL. The upkeep was killing me. I spend all my time at shitty soccer fields and parking lots. My kids kept putting their muddy cleats on the back of my seats. The hand washing requirement was just exhausting. I leased an X5 to see if that would solve the problem and I haven’t started the M’s engine since. It was the best car I ever had but just not right for my lifestyle at this moment in time. The expertise on this forum, including comments about knowing when you have the wrong car for your needs, were incredibly helpful. So were the tutorials on leasing and why I should do it for the first time. I’ve never been so tortured about a decision but I’ve had 6 months to come to terms with it and when the kids get older, I’ll be back in something even more ridiculous!

Yes it is.

I have auto alerts setup to email me cars with my requirements. I had it setup before I purchased my F82 and never turned it off. All of the alerts I get end up being sold within 2-3 days of listing. I think a lot of people are looking but all with the same requirements, low KM, unique colour, carbon roof, executive package (LED headlights) and no accidents.

One of the most recent good deals was a 2018 sahkir orange M4 with executive package with 20k km, carbon roof for 58k CAD. I was going to buy it to replace mine but me hesitating in downgrading to extended leather from full leather made me miss the deal, it was sold within 2 days! Also, I'd have to get shafted for my trade in value as it will be 20%-30% lower than selling privately.

didn't realize the chip shortages were contributing but makes sense.

i've given up hope on finding a 3080. every place is either sold out or price gouging.

. . Different strokes for different folks my man. Unfortunately broke my back in my 20’s and simple things aren’t so simple anymore. More props to the forum for recommending Stuart McGill’s back mechanic.

. Absolutely gorgeous ride you have there. I’m in love with the X5. It’s the old man ride I need. I feel like I’m driving while sitting in a nice recliner in a trendy lounge.

I’m at the same point in my life. Middle school kids and I’m shuttling them around in the M3. Some days I loathe it, others I don’t. I’m definitely driving the wife’s Tahoe more and she’s even commenting “you have a car. This one is mine.”

Haha

just tried vroom

2015 m3 with 30k miles. offered me 43k. i think i could definitely get more private party being a manual. i'm seeing similar cars on autotrader in the high 40s. but nice to know i could get 43k instantly if i wanted.
