Safe to drive to track?
I plan on taking my F80 to the track for the first time end of this month. My car has been experiencing a ticking noise upon cold startup. Same as this video, . Based on what I've read, it could be related to exhaust cam torque, engine oil, or something that some have just learned to live with.
I was wondering if anyone here experienced it and if it would be safe to take to the track. Waiting on dealer to get back to me at the moment. Car has 32k miles and is not under warranty. Thanks in advance for any input. |

I just went and started my M2 with the hood open, sounds like a metallic sewing machine.
Are you signing up with Chin at COTA, or another track?

If under warranty get something thicker LL01 approved. Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40, Motul X-Cess 5W40 GEN2, Valvoline European Vehicle 5W40.
Especially if you plan to track. If not under warranty, Castrol 0W40. |

That ticking is completely normal. It's the injectors and HPFPs. Same sound on both my F80 and my F82. It's worse on cold start.
That doesn't sound like the VANOS tick (clunk), which is a rare but real problem.

Question, how would a cars warranty affect what oil to use? Also, any issue with changing oil if one kind was used historically?

F80 you can use LL01 FE (FE=Fuel economy) or LL01. You really want LL01 during warranty. After warranty there are several other options. There is thread with much more details about this: Another engine oil thread. Castrol Edge/Pennzoil/ Liqui Moly? https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1764629 |
