Those with competition package - do you find the ride on 20's harsh?

I've read the odd thread about how you can order your car with the competition package, and a few have contemplated doing so to avoid harsh ride.

So instead of getting the 20" 666M (20x9.0, 265/30 R20 front and 20x10.0, 285/30 R20 rear) wheels, you can order the 19" 437M in Black (19x9.0, 255/35 R19 front and 19x10.0, 275/35 R19 rear).

I'm wondering who here finds their 666M wheels too harsh, and Please include how the roads are in your city in general, and if that impacts it, you think.

PS I might track my car 3 to 5 days a year. Which wheel would be better for those days?

18's are better for track days as you get more selections of tire.

I have the 20's in probably the worst place to have them, NYC, and they dont really feel any different than the 18's, 19's and 20's I've had on other cars.

I've had both the 19s and 20s and honestly haven't noticed a huge difference (maybe leaning a little more harsh on the 20s if I had to really pick a side). I'm in South Texas and commute to San Antonio and Austin a bunch and the roads here are horrible. So that won't help. Once the car is on smooth pavement they're great. But if you get onto any rough highway expect a lot of road noise and with pothole filled road don't have any open drinks in the car that are full. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Also I can't speak to tracking the car as I'm one of "those" M owners who will probably never track their car.

I'd use whatever tires came with the car initially. So you have the comp pkg wheels, you're saying?

In an ideal world I'd have a dedicated set, and if I was a total track junkie... For 3 to 5 days a year, it's too much of a PITA to have a full set of track wheels and tires, and swap them back and forth, so I'd be sticking with my regular set.

Yeah, I probably won't get a separate set of track wheels, which is why I figured maybe the 19's would be a good compromise, as generally, smaller wheels I thought are better for track due to lower rotational mass. Not to mention, tires should be cheaper, and ride possibly a bit less harsh due to more sidewall.

For the most part, our roads here in Vancouver are pretty good, so that's a good thing.

Anyone finding the ZCP wheels harsh should check their tire pressures; I though mine were harsh but figured it was normal. I finally checked them, and they were high by around 5 PSI each. After adjusting, they're fine - no complaints.

I picked mine up at the performance center. Maybe someone missed a step during the PDI.

I have no issues with the wheels. The ride isn't harsh IMO even in Sport mode. Sport+ mode can be a handful depending on the road. The only complaint I have is the tire noise -- it's rather loud to me but I've gotten used to it by now.

I'm mostly on Long Island roads with the occasional trip into NYC. I'm very used to keeping an eye on the road for potholes and such as I experienced 2 bent rims and many flats with my previous 335is (19's). In comparison, the ZCP 20's are faring much better.

The next complaint I have is the need for a winter wheel/tire setup. There's only one option for the 20s and even then, those tires are quite wide and would be counter-productive in anything more than a dusting probably.

Same here....DC and Baltimore roads resemble what i'd imagine is a war zone and I was in both cities yesterday. No issues at all and I was expecting a huge difference from my 2014 535. Not so much at all actually but I am sure part of that is the shitty run flats on the 5 series.

Great to hear guys. Thanks for the input. Sounds like few people opt for the 19's instead. Wonder why people downgrade to them?

Besides aesthetics, Are there really any advantages to getting the 20's over the 19's, in terms of handling? I can't imagine an extra 10mm per tire would be a big difference in terms of grip, and the lower sidewall should give you a stiffer tire, which is a good thing on the track, no?

This was the thread that got me thinking about it, and wondering how many people are in fact ordering their comp pkg cars with 19's.

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1325074

PS For winters even with the comp pkg, you can go down to 19's, and even 18's, if Tire Rack is to be believed. Is that not correct?

What is for you a issue? I have no issues as well with my 20" .... buuuuut.... a stock 19" or 18" tire is for sure more comfortable then the stock 20" tires...

Let me put my question the opposite way I guess... Besides looks, are there any actual advantages for getting 20's over 19's?

And for track days, which would be better, the 19's or 20's, on OEM rubber? I won't be getting a new set of wheels just for a few track days a year.

None at all, it's purely looks, And for tracking 19's are better. This coming from someone who has the 20's on. But honestly if your going to opt for the Comp pack, get the 20's. It's the most complimented piece on my car by strangers and car enthusiasts alike.

Thanks, that's what I figured. But yeah, it's sort of pains me inside to pay for the Comp Pkg, and then end up downgrading to the 19" wheels. You're paying extra for the 20's... Good to hear at least that it's not a major disadvantage in DD ride quality.

I've only driven my car in Europe so far, but the ride was fine on the 666M's... didn't really notice the road noise either. I suspect the ride has more to do with the adaptive suspension that's standard on the '17 than anything.

My winter setup is the 437M's w/ Pirelli SZII's... those will get mounted next weekend (take PC re-D on 12/2)

Cheers,

What pressure should they be at? I thumbed through the manual and didn't see anything regarding the 20"s (only 19 and 18s). And that was a fair amount higher than the door jam recommendation of 32psi front and back. I think the manual was suggesting mid 30s for rear 19s and high 30s for the fronts if I recall correctly (possibly even around 40psi for the fronts if one wanted to drive over 100mph...)

F80 ZCP 2018. 666 wheels. On the track the ride quality is phenomenal! Tires grip really well and the car feels planted. On roads...still wrestling with how to get the car feeling smoother. Ride feels really hard, and can feel even the slightest bump / crack on the road. And that's on efficient/comfort/comfort. I'm thinking it could be the tires for sure. I had 19s on my previous 435mSport, and ride didn't feel as this harsh. That being said, this is a proper performance sports car, so I'm starting to get used to it and just learning getting connected to the car feel. It's an amazing machine, and still love every second i get to drive it. ///M for life.

What PSI do you recommend for the ZCP wheels on a DD?
