Picked up my new M4 - Quick initial opinions

I've been lurking these forums for a while, before committing to a new M4 competition pack. I gotta say, reading these forums and youtube made me crazy. All the talk about the car not sounding good, being too stiff, and the other general negative comments I'm happily relieved to not feel that way about any aspect of the car so far. The only feature I dislike is the rev matching. While its good for a someone new to driving stick. I heel and toe and double clutch from habbit, so I feel I always have to keep it in sport+.

I picked up my car yesterday, put about 250 miles on it so far.

For anyone in the market, who may be lurking:

1. Car sounds awesome.
2. Car is awesomely fast.
3. This car is tremendously fun, and I can't wait to get out of break-in.

Congratulations! --I dislike rev-matching too. It became apparent it was changing my driving style when I would drive my older cars without rev-matching.

Here's a whole thread on how to disable it via coding:

Congrats! I picked up my ZCP M4 on Friday. I've been having similar thoughts. After researching so much on this forum I was also concerned about sound, ride quality, etc. No issues with any of those things for me so far.

love it

agreed, car feels great, i just sold my '16 GT350 for the '18 M4 w/comp.

LOVE LOVE the rims, makes the car! despite 100 less HP versus shelby it's faster, and I've only got 200 miles so barely broke 4k rpm ( break in period now). can't wait to really hit it hard...the DCT is tremendous too.

the only thing I miss on the shelby is the exhaust sound, it was legendary, the M4 sounds ok but nothing to get excited over really, it is a 6 cyl so will never sound as good as a v-8.
bottom line, the m4 is a precise, well engineered, beautiful yet deadly work of art

I'll post some pics once the tints are done on Weds. I think the ride quality is fantastic for a car that is so capable and nimble. Never expected this car to ride like a 7 series. I'm keeping the rpm under 5500 for break in, and still crazy fast.

Congrats... I am actually looking to get rid of my 18 M3 in a year for the Shelby. I would love to hear your opinion on the GT350, what made you get rid of it??

Congrats man!
The M4 is a very beautiful car. You will get a lot of "turning heads" checking out your car.

Once again, not to start a how to break in our car thread, but keeping the RPMs under 4K is doing your car no favors. Take it at least to the 5,500 very early on (first 20 miles if possible) and do so only when warmed up. And go easy on the brakes for the first few hundred miles.

Brakes should be bed in hard when new.

Welcome to the Forum and Congrats on your new M4!! I too had similar thoughts and worries but they were all squashed the very first time I drove one. People were simply comparing it to the previous V8 which sounds incredible and the other half bemoaned about the active sound.

All in all, I love my car and I like the way it sounds and drives. I hope you enjoy yours too. Believe me, you'll love it even more once you get it broken in and finally open it up on a nice road!!

rides like a 7 series?

i didn't think US comfort mode was that different from ours. I should probably look into, and get the wife off my case!

I wasn’t very clear. I meant that based on some of the reviews I was expecting an unusually harsh ride. I was pleased to find out the car rides exactly as it should IMO, for a car that drives as an M4 does. If I were expecting 7series smooth, I’d be disappointed.

Congrats! I have a question about double clutching. I've driven nothing but modern manual transmission cars since 1990. All have had synchronizers and shifting was very easy in all of them. In my experience, none of them required double clutching for smooth shifts, no matter how fast I had to shift. What is the purpose for double clutching in modern manual trans cars w/ synchronizers for all gears, etc. It seems very archaic and a waste of time to do this on every shift.

This is what I've read on double clutching. Do you really do all these steps regularly while driving around town? If so, why?

The double clutching technique involves the following steps:
  • The accelerator (throttle) is released, the clutch pedal is pressed, and the gearbox is shifted into neutral.
  • The clutch pedal is then released, the driver matches the engine speed to the gear speed either using the throttle (accelerator) (when changing to a lower gear) or waiting for engine speed to decrease (when changing to a higher gear) until they are at a level suitable for shifting into the next gear (although double clutching is almost always used for downshifting only).
  • At the moment when the revs between input shaft (i.e. engine revs) and gear are closely matched, the driver then instantly presses the clutch again to shift into the next gear. The result should be a very smooth gear change.

With respect to rev matching, I too loved doing it on my own, but I would say give it a chance. After a while, I came to really appreciate it for around town driving as heel/toeing is difficult for me to do casually when driving at normal speeds. It seems to work best when driving fast and mashing the brake pedal hard and blipping the throttle. This is because the brake is hard pinned and I don't have to worry about feathering the brake pedal when simultaneously blipping the throttle. However, when braking with less force, it's difficult, for me at least, to modulate the brake pedal and smoothly slow down while giving a consistent blip sufficient to smoothly rev match. Hence, I leave my car in sport 99% of the time and enjoy the rev matching.
