M4 done for?
2 weeks into having the m4 and it already giving me a headache.
Was cruising and doing some pulls with some friend and the car was chilling in 5th gear at 4.5k rpm and the next thing huge clouds of white smoke coming out from the back of the car and it started to leak oil everywhere. Car was on stage 1 bm3 tune and everything else was stock. Does anyone know what went out/failed? Guessing my head gasket, valve cover, or turbo went out but hell what do i know lol https://vimeo.com/778673966 Updated pulled the car from BMW after 4 days with no diagnostics results and took it to a known independent shop. Turns out the motor has snapped a connecting rod and punctured multiple holes in the block and oil pan. Going to have to get the engine replaced sadly. Ouch. That oil leak would concern me more than anything else... really, hard to say what let loose without looking at it in person. Presumably you had it towed to your favorite shop, and they'll take a look today.
Best of luck.

Yup - time to get that checked out asap. Check codes, take to your favorite Indy, etc.
Best of luck - I hope it's not something crazy.

My bet is on a turbo. Was the smoke out the tailpipe or coming from under the car (mainly which way)?

From what my friend said and what I saw was a huge cloud of white smoke coming from the back of my car so I guess from the tailpipe. Car sounded like it was dying when it was started up to put into neutral to roll it into the parking spot.

That’s unfortunately going to be the case with these cars as time goes by, between value and realistic use prior to ownership, We may never know how the former owner treated the car. It appears that the F8X platform has been considereably better over E9X platform in terms if reliability when you leave all things being stock( Daily use/Weekend drives/ and maybe a track day/yr, Dont start throwing rocks folks, just saying).
However, once people start throwing simple over the counter ECU Tunes and thrash it for a short time, then revert the ECU and associated information. It makes it difficult for the next owner. It’s a Risk vs reward unfortuantely. Remember these cars may be cheaper than they were new, however the replacement parts do not follow the depreciation from factory. Only used products, so maintenance and replacement parts are that of a vehicle MSRP of $70K-$90K if you use OEM/Genuine parts. Hopefully it is something simpler like a blown turbo and perhaps and aftermarket’s set are for sale, cheaper. |
