Irregular Click Sound from Engine at Idle
I now have about 1400 miles on my 2016 F80, but I've noticed this sound after several minutes of idle since probably 900 miles. Of course, it didn't happen when I took it in for my 1200mi service. This appears to be coming from the passenger side of the car. It comes and goes while at idle and as the video sound indicates, it isn't steady. I have yet to test if it paces with RPM's.
Anyone else experience this? Last edited by M3Fury; 11-20-2015 at 09:28 PM.. |

Very , very hard to tell anything from the video. Couple options , fans kicking on and off, direct injection is extremely noisey, dct trans can cause some noise from time to time.

Almost have to close your eyes to hear it better from the video. But yeah just trying to find out if others have ever heard. Diagnosis would be a bonus but not crossing my fingers.

I can hear the DI, but if you pay close attention there is a click noise for sure.
Click...click... click-click.... click. It's a sharper sound.

Rod bearings! Just kidding.
It might be something just as simple as something touching the heat shield under the car. Have it checked out, could be something minor

You laugh...but my 2016 M4 has that very exact sound and my SA and tech are pretty sure its rod bearings. Once it warms up it goes away. Had to leave car at dealer over night so they could start it first thing in the morning. PUMA case has been started. Maybe this is why the new CPs are coming with a modified bedplate?... Anyway I'm living the nightmare again from my E90 M3 days with the crank journal issues that BMW turned a blind eye towards. More to come....

It might be because of any one of these reasons -because of slipped oil bearing, rod knock, or wrist pin knock. Your motor is going to be failed, and would be planning for the worst soon. You can check it with large screwdriver to figure out which piston is getting damaged. Take early action to avert bigger damage to your vehicle. It will be better to visit top rated BMW mechanics.

Dealer cold started mine this morning. I couldn't be there but I'd sent them video that isolated the ticking sound. Of course they said nothing abnormal but now I at least have my complaint on record. My next step is to get an oil analysis just to be sure.
Edit: when I went in to pick up the car. They started it up while I was there after sitting for 4 hrs. As usual it took about 3 minutes before the chirp...chirp...chirp chip chirp came around. The tech thought it might be the catalytic converter heating up since on the right side. Seems slim to none that that's it. |

I have a similar "ticking" noise which occurs only after cold start - once car is warm noise goes away. My car has less than 3000km's on the odometer.

Take it to the dealer. That's what warranty is for.
