I feel like my Powerstop's squeal only in warmer weather- all winter they were pretty quiet but now we're climbing into the 40's/50's and they're squealing.

I think I'll swap over to the Akebono's when I throw on my summer wheels/tires.

Emailed PowerStop with a general "wtf?" - no damage to the wheel or caliper, and no stones or sticks stuck in the wheel. I think the things broke off due to brittle metal (you can see the porous break) and very cold temps combined with vibration.

Get Akebonos I just swapped them yesterday and the quality is night and day. Never will I cheap out on pads again. The squeaking and horrible QC was unbearable. My shims weren't in place, fitment was crap, and the only thing that worked was the metal retainer clip lmao.

I had squeaking when they were warm, and blood-curdling screeching in the cold lose-lose!

I will point out that the anti-vibration/noise reduction ears or whatever they are called are much larger than stock. No matter, when the pins are inserted the stand-off from the caliper is fine. There is no contact with the caliper. Follow the typical bedding instructions. I have 600 miles on the pads. There is no squeal and hardly any brake dust at all even after several periods of driving in wet weather. Bite is as good as stock. I highly recommend these pads.

Products
------------------------------------------------------
1 x Hawk HPS 5.0 brake pads - rear (D1656) [1 box required] (63-411-1656) = $112.00
1 x Hawk HPS 5.0 brake pads - front (D1609) [1 box required] (63-411-1609) = $154.00
------------------------------------------------------
Sub-Total: $266.00
Any updates on this?

To confirm these do come with the silver tabs (can't find pictures with these even on Hawk's home page).

Destroyed a set of Cool Carbon during some high speed runs (straight line) and want to ensure this does not happen again.

Had the z16s before and the squeal was rare and tolerable. Recently put on the z26 and this one is scandalous. The squeal is ear piercing. I've only had it for 2 weeks and I'm ready to take them off. I did find that pumping the brakes 5-10 times before starting the car then another 5-10 times after starting the car that it helps minimize or control the squeaking. It doesn't always work especially when it's cold in the morning or at night.
I took the car for a spirited drive today hoping that putting wear on it will decrease the squeal but I'm not optimistic that that'll work..
Hoping other people will share more reviews about the akebonos or the hawks.

I've been daily driving with the Akebonos for 3 months now. I'm very happy. They did quietly squeal one time on a cold morning. I did initially get worried, but I'm happy to report that they haven't made a noise since.

A couple things I'm gonna do when I get new rotors.

- First, I would coat the entire rotor with high temp clear coat to fight rust forming on the veins and drill hole bevels. This will allow you to drive right after washing the car without having rust water fling all over the wheel barrels. And it'll just look cleaner through out the life of the rotor.

- Second, new Akebono brake pads to evenly break in both the rotor surface and pads.

It's up to you if you want to do these steps; they aren't mandatory.

I bought the Akebono set for my 18' F80 M3 about a month ago thanks to this thread. After too many honey-do-list tasks burning into my weekends, I finally got a weekend where I could throw the Akebono pads on my M3.

I finished in no time and took the car out for a spin to bed the pads and listen for noise, etc. I am happy to report that the pads are set, not a squeal in sight and hopefully tomorrow I will wash the beast and see how long it takes to build up brake dust on the wheels.

I did get a few looks at the stop light on the off ramp. The other drivers could smell the burning ceramic as much as I could, I think the pedal feel and brake grab was comparable to OEM and quiet as a church mouse.

I'm about to install my akebono's this week. But how do you guys do the bed-in procedure?
Akebono says they need no bedding in at all....

For what it's worth I've had powerstop pads sitting in my garage for 2 years and my OEM pads just kept kicking butt. At 71k miles, I was on all OEM pads and rotors and still had life left.

I decided to swap to powerstop when I swapped to summer wheels/tires. I'm on 18" OEM wheels.

First off: The OEM pads were doing great. Besides brake fluid changes, my pads have never been touched. I tapped out the caliper spring retaining pins using a small drill bit (lol). The pads needed a bit of leverage using a screwdriver to loosen them against the rotors and then slid out without hassle despite lots of build-up. The OEM rotors have meaningful build-up of rust/corrosion in the drilled holes, rotor lip, and inside near the rotor hat. But honestly, it doesn't impact function and the rotors are very thick and high quality pieces.

Second: The powerstop pads also feel well done. The shims are well secured and well placed. The weights on top did concern me but feel very well secured and, once properly secured in the calipers, clear the wheel barrels by a reasonable amount of space. The supplied grease with the pads were inadequate which makes me wonder if others who have had squeal because they don't have enough anti-squeal grease on their backing plates/shims. I used wheel hub/wheel bearing grease I've had for years and never had squeal on. We shall see how they perform.

Looking forward to a much less dusty summer on my beautiful OEM 513s.

When you say "coat the entire rotor with high temp clear coat" do you actually mean to whole bare metal face of the rotor? Hum, I thought you weren't suppose to put anything where the pads contact the rotor...So you're not masking anything?

Thanks!

Wow, 12 pages of brake pad porn!
I'm torn now between the AkeBono's and the Hawks. For me, the dust of the OEM pads are not that annoying but less dust would be great. I'm doing a fluid flush in the next few weeks and replacing with RBF-600.

I've already experienced fade with "spirited" driving on some of the back roads here in the black forest. What I'm torn on is whether either of the two pads above would be better at fade resistance and if not, would you guys recommend a third pad for better performance?

I needed pads for the Macan and also thanks to this thread when down the Akebono path.
Had them on for a year now and very happy - so much less dust and they feel almost like OEM.

I will definately be getting them for the M4 when I need new pads in 10 years at this rate...

I was skeptical on these since I’m pretty picky with brake feel but hated the dust so I thought I’d try the Akebenos.

Out of the box they are a nice pad with quality shims already setup and ready to go.

The pads do not bite as hard on the initial touch of the pedal/when covering the pedal, but the stopping power is still there when you need it and overall they feel good.

I have not heard a single noise from them either.

If the car came with these I probably would have been happy with the braking power even then. Overall for a daily driver or cruiser I think they are a great choice. I am very happy - hardly any dust after a lot of cruising and spirited driving.

Got tired of the oem brake dust and installed the Akebonos thanks to this thread, very easy install by the way. The braking power is great, very linear, feels like oem to me under regular driving and some light spirited driving and the best part is my wheels are still clean!

What pads are you running on the track?

Are you guys using the existing steel rotors when switching out to the Akebonos or do you have to switch to new rotors too?

If it's the latter, where are you getting them from?
