tune deleted but still no cold start?

2018 m4 comp, manual, afe magnum intake system.

stalls when you start to take off, if you start the car and let it run for 10 mins it's OK.

got the car from an auction with no history. when scanned the vehicle with ISTA "suspicious tune" comes up. and there is no cold start.

program the vehicle to the latest software to delete the tune, as I don't know what it is.

now vehicle doesn't pop up and saying "suspicious tune" when scanning. but still stalls when cold and still no cold start. no faults come up.

smoke tested the intake system and nothing is leaking. runs great when warm.

strange with the tune deleted there is still no cold start. I don't want to condemn the intakes yet as they wouldn't cause a no cold start function.

anyone experience this before?

After market intakes are known to cause idle issues when cold..... Can you try resetting DME and see if the factory parameters return?

I'll try it tomorrow when I get back to work. maybe just an adaptations reset might work.

the intakes definitely can be the stalling issue but having that higher idle cold start not there anymore is also contributing to the stalling

If the car doesn't go through the cold start procedure on a morning startup then it's still tuned. You could send the VIN to PTF and ask if they have any info. If no luck there you could ask Alex at Alpine to do a full DME reset for you.

I have the same intakes and i can, personally, tell you that my car will sputter/nearly stall unless i let it sit for 2-3 minutes. This all started when i put in intakes and flashed BM3 stage 1.

Even on a cold start (cold start deleted) on downpipes and bm3 stage 1, my car would NOT do this.

worked on the car a bit more today and found the pipe next to the left side maf sensor disconnected, so that will probably help with my stalling for sure, right now its warm and working good. but still the tune is there, i programmed the vehicle deleted all adaptations. , still no cold start and the crackle/pop burbles are still loud as ever, scan it again s 0777 suspicious tune. i just want to delete the tune all together and purchase bm3. i contacted protuningfreaks and they can't help as its a legal issue. so how do you delete a tune?

You can go to a reputable shop and have it coded back to stock

i have bmw ista software. i just programmed the dme and coded it. everything went great, no faults, test drive, doesn't seem to be doing the burble, it has the m exhaust so your gonna get some noise. bring it in and scan it, suspicious tune but now its saying dme tampering, contact technical support, so if i contact them, bye bye warranty and im sure they will say replace the dme and program/code it.

i guess has anybody successfully removed a tune with an actual account for bm3, assuming this car is tuned with bm3

Once a car has been tuned BMW can see it in the DME, regardless if flashed back to stock and locked. This started around Nov-2020 when BMW updated their scanning software. Car software version doesn't matter here. Their new SW looks for tunes when it's hooked up...I bet that saves them a ton on warranty claims.

The only way to get around this is to buy a replacement DME for tuning...and keep the original DME unmodified. It sucks because swapping a DME is a lot of work.

ah huh, I figured something like that. the car now acts like it isn't tuned, ill check in the morning to see if the cold start feature works and now the intake is completely hooked up, ill check for stalling as well. after I programmed/encoded the dme I drove it, warm, and it didn't crackle and pop like the tune did before.

but when scanned again (no check engine light) it still said suspicious tune, so now maybe it's permanently burned into the dme regardless if the tune is gone. so people saying, "flash your car back before warranty services" is not true anymore? I'll check back tomorrow with an update.

Correct, you flash back to stock as a courtesy if your SA isn't tune friendly. You can still get your included maintenance like oil changes and wipers with a "tune flag". Just be sure to tell them not to update your software.

its not the service advisor or tech that matters, its warranty admin and bmw themselves, if you flash your car back to stock, bring the car in because of say an engine light on. i scan it and find a misfire in say #4 cylinder, perform misfire detection test plan through ista, fault comes back as #4 injector faulty, ista test plan produces a diag code for warranty, we print the test plan/daig code to file for warranty. talk to shop foreman and he signs off on the job, i install the injector and perform test plan again, everything passes. good to go. sometime later warranty admin comes back saying this car had/has a tune and bmw warranty kicked it back, now the dealer pays for everything. bmw warranty/head office can see everything that we do to vehicle once we hook up a scanner. so now as a tech, when i see suspicious tune, i have to say something before ordering any parts because they will kick it back. and now even if the tune is gone, "suspicious tune" still pops up.

and to update on the tune delete, what did it was actually programming/encoding the dme through ista. let the car go to sleep, then started the car, COLD START is back, and the stalling if gone, and the burble is gone as well, so its safe to say the tune is now gone, but it still says "suspicious tune" so TopJimmy you were right, since nov 2020 bmw new ista software will spot a tune or if car was tuned.

My car used to stall and buck if I tried to drive it in the first 2 minutes of starting it when cold. I had BMS intakes and a JB4 and backend tune. I would just let it warm up... I attributed it to the intakes.

yeah this car would stall right out, but a pipe was disconnected, that was the problem, once plugged back in it wouldn't stall, but stumble until warmed up. but now that the tune is gone and cold start is back, the car starts at it should, no stumble. all i wanted to do was delete the tune as i didn't know what it was. its gone now and the car is running great, slower haha

My understanding was the only a tune can program cold start delete, if there is still no cold start function then the tune must still be there.

that's how I can tell that the tune was still there, no high idle in cold start. but after I programmed/encoded the dme through ISTA, the cold start was back and burbles gone.
so now the car is finally back to stock.
