Thought I was buying a competition M3..

Haven’t bought the car yet, but I found a 2017 BMW M3 6spd Manual at a carmax online. The details state it was equipped with both executive and competition packages.

I place the order to have it transferred to my Local carmax. ($600). I now realize that it has neither the competition or executive package as it was listed incorrectly. It had aftermarket wheels which at the time was the only indicator what the competition package was, I now now know all the details.

I’m not too worried about the transfer I paid, as I’m confident I can get it back (not the first time carmax made mistakes). My question is, is this car really worth it? I did like the idea of the HUD and the rest of the tech. I guess I don’t care too much for the esthetics of the comp package as those parts can be added easily.

17” BMW M3 Alpine White on Black
6speed Manual
33k Miles
$56,998

Chrome grille and side vents are 100% cue not a Comp.

Besides that, still looks like a good deal in this market and Comp really ain’t all that. Exec is nice but not a deal killer either.

See if they’ll cut a deal for messing up the transaction and if so buy it. If they stick to the typical no deal Carmax bullshit, immediately walk. Don’t reward their incompetence.

So far they are giving me Free Maxcare which is their warranty ( 60 Months or 125k Miles with $500 Deductible that covers All Major Systems, Parts, and Electronics) and potentially $3000 off (still working on this).

Whoa now you're talking!

If all else checks out, TAKE IT. I think that warranty alone is worth at least $4k. So if you get that, plus $3k off, you are cutting a super fat hog in this market.

DO IT

Yo!

So, it looks like a purposeful built stripped car. So on the flip side of having all the cool tech, this one was probably spec'ed to spend time on the track. Just echoing what I have read around here as far as builds like the one you are looking at. 6sp, no exec, no comp, m513' wheels, yes adaptive suspension.

Its really you to you if its worth it. I would most def have it inspected at an indy shop or at least a BMW dealer. It looks like a good looking car, but my spidy senses go off a smidge looking at the big picture. If a PPI comes out shining, then I think this is a great start point.

AND the deal you are suggesting sounds pretty good. I would be all over a free Max Care and 3k off....

good luck!

Agree with the initial comments. Comp package, not a deal breaker as you can easily add most of those items except maybe the seats. They tend to be pricey, even used. I would try to get in the seat of any BMW that has the heads up display. While it sounds like carmax is trying to right their wrong, make sure this is what you want and see yourself keeping.

what wheels are on that car?

They look small in the rear. Almost like they are square.

I'm currently looking for an M car too. In your situation, for me, it would come down to how long you plan on keeping the car and were you planning on a lot of mods. They're offering a good deal. But it's not what you want. If you're good with that then go for it. For me, I'd keep hunting. I keep cars longer than the average person. It would probably bug me if I didn't get the options that I wanted. If you turn cars over every 2 or 3 years, then it might be alright since you'll be planning something new soon anyway.

I would pass on the car.
The HUD is pretty cool and the upgraded headlights make a difference. Finally, wheels are going to cost you a decent amount.
I would consider if the wheels that were on the car were good

I would pass on this car. Non competition cars are not as desirable on used market. Also, Any mods you do to make it a competition will also hurt resale.

I'd just go for another car elsewhere and get exactly what you want. There are lots out there. You'll be disappointed if you don't. Headlights/hud/wheels/exhaust tips/black out all make the executive/competition much nicer of a vehicle.

If you're daily driving it's non negotiable I think. If you will only mostly track the car then maybe you can do without.

Thanks all. I’m Deff not going to track it. It will be a daily driver or a weekend car to enjoy. I am leaning more towards the HUD and upgraded headlights.

Thanks for the tip for the wheels! I’m assuming someone just slapped on cheap wheels to trade it in. I will Deff mention it may be a square setup instead of a staggered set up, which will hurt the price a bit.

A few more weeks until the car gets here I’ll keep everyone updated.

I just found it difficult to find a 6speed F80 M3 so far and jumped on this

buy my M3 - I'm considering selling it.
17 M3 Azurite Black - Blackout edition - Non-Comp - Exec package - has the heads-up, LED lights - full adaptive so they turn when you turn the wheel, full leather upgrade - dash is leather - not like the plastic base-model, DCT - 27,300 miles currently - has correct wheels and tires - asking - 60,000
I purchased in 19 from BMW as certified pre-owned with 16,500 miles -
I mean if you are hooked on the 3-pedal set up, it might be a deal-breaker - but if you have never driven a 7 speed DCT you just don't understand what you are missing out on. Think 15ms shift - these cars have too much power for the manual shift, just too much juice. It's hard to control with a DCT as it is.

I recently bought a '18 F80 M3 base and think I made the right choice. The 20" wheels on the comp and remapped dampers can be on the harsh side for a road car. Price looks fair on the car along with the extended warranty.

How is it a no brainer when it's missing those options?

Yeah seems they priced it too high because they accidentally priced it as if it had comp and exec packages. I wouldn't compromise if it were me.

a 2017 M4 by me are all going for near $60k+

With $3000 off, that seems like a great deal to me if you're okay with not having those options.

Why do you want the 6speed? I may get a lot of negative feedback for saying this but the dct is better than having a manual I think.

The dct is incredible and I'd take its uniqueness over a 6speed manual anyday. It shifts gears better than you could ever do plus it slams them into place it's unique I find and gives great character. Also, for city driving in traffic you can be in economy mode and relax like a regular automatic.

Also this is probably the last generation of the dct

DCT is great, I had one in my prior M2, but it was incredibly boring to drive. I like shifting through the gears, it's just flat out more engaging.

Here is a generated sales sticker for my car. Just doing the math for options you probably want (lighting, executive, competition which I don't have) quickly adds up if you have to retroactively add these features. Add the fact that you probably want wheels and it's not a no brainer like some people are advising.

if you're not going to track it and want something with a bit more comfort then F10 M5 seems to be around the same price.
