Quite possibly the most dangerous way to fix curbed diamond cut wheels

So, I have a bad habit. I like to obtain cars that have ~4000 miles on them, letting others take that new car hit. Unfortunately though...they always seem to come with curb rash on the wheels.

Last winter, I tried to Dremel and paint my way out of an eye sore. While I got out most of the rash...there's no paint that can go over the diamond finish that makes this look good.

I then got the stupid idea of buying a $20 diamond cutting tool off Amazon, put the car on my lift jack, and giving a go at the lip cutting.

Couple things to note - the car is really secure on the lift jack system. I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to do this on jack stands (I would not do this on jack stands). My car being a manual required me to get inside. depress the clutch and put the car in gear. 2nd created a good enough rotation on the wheel. Doing this is not for the faint at heart.

As stated above, the rash was already fixed with sanders and the Dremel tool. I was basically taking off the old clearcoat and what I had previously painted with the flat edge of the tool, then using the point of the diamond cutter to rescore the metal.

In conclusion:
Is this perfect? No. And I'm still looking to get these professionally redone.
Is it better? Absolutely. And this is the only self done solution that I can see working. There's no YouTube clip out there that shows a good way to fix these.
Was I nervous about doing this? Hell yeah.

Video of the cutting:

Lift Jack system used
Painted wheels from prior fixes
Diamond cutting tool - VerLich Lathe Turning Tools (they doubled in price since I bought these)
Clear coat used (imported Wurth clearcoat from the UK - specific for wheels)

Here's a quick before and after on this. I know the paint looks really bad...Trust me when I say I went through 5 different shades over last winter. There's nothing that looks good on this. Cutting is the only way to go

I lost sleep over those little things, but I don't anymore. Great job on the wheel!

It costs 125-150 to have it professionally repaired. How much did you spend on tools and time? I diy a lot of things but something like this I'll just leave it alone. I have the shadow line 666m and no one can match it so I used a marker to hide it a bit and live with it.

Dude wheel shops do this stuff reasonably priced, and will look new/oem. Can't believe you went through this process.

Part of the issue - I haven't found anyone near where I'm at that does diamond cutting...and they curbed both wheels on the left side (front shown was worse).

So if you're pricing is accurate, I'd be doubling that, plus shipping costs. Compared to $20 tool and $15 can of clear.

As stated though, I will be getting these redone once I need new tires. Till then, I'm good now.

As stated above - have not found one where I'm at yet. Do plan on getting them done once I find a place. In the meantime, this worked out.

So did you have the traction control on or off?

you could've probably bought a whole new wheel with the amount of time/effort/materials you spent on all that trial and error iterations. But if you're into DIY and doing things for the fun of it then that's understandable.

Very impressive. Even more ballsy. Good for you for taking matters into your own hands and fixing them yourself!
