Can you spin crank hub by just revving the car?

I was making a video of my exhaust and I was revving it and a friend with an M4 said bye bye crank hub jokingly and then that led to the discussion could the crank hub actually spin by being parked and revving the car or does the car need to actually be moving and under load?

Stop worrying about your hub. It's unpredictable and mostly happens to tuned cars.

Crank hub has been overly exaggerated on this forum. This needs to stop!

People recommend avoiding kickdown in the dct. Does this mean pedal down to the floor and clicking the button or does this extend down to general downshifting? I.e. to use the engine to brake.

I live the 2-1 downshift at low speeds (<10mph). Curious if this is harmful.

Its completely random by, the odds of it happening to tuned car is the same as happening to stock cars with barely 1000 miles on it.

The unfortunate truth is the tuned vehicle will not be covered under warranty, as the stock will be cover if under warranty.

Agree, thats a price to pay for more fun. But looking at the forum, you get the feeling its happening to every other car when i reality its got to be less than 1%

The true number isn’t known and would be difficult to figure out.
I’ve heard of a few Ms by me get it and they aren’t on the forums to speak.
Also a couple others that were tuned and did stuff at a independent mechanic.
However, there are way more vehicles that never got it and aren’t on the forums either. It’s just good to know the risks when engaging in tuning. The term “pay to play” is really in play if u do all the works and get the spun crank hub. The worst would be never being tuned and this happening after warranty expires. Best of luck to all!

It still seems to be way more frequent on tuned cars...

The extra power of a tune is exposing the weakest link in a complex chain.

It's clearly way more common in tuned cars - although overall a rare phenomenon. The difference is if it is stock and keeps spinning, you have recourse through BMW and have a strong case for invoking lemon laws if preset in your location. Or at least getting BMW to buy it back end of lease. Otherwise get ready to pay from your pocket.

I've asked the question regarding SCH at all three BMW dealers in my area, along with an Indy who is well respected. None of them had ever heard of an S55 with this issue (hands on in their respective shops I mean).

Agreed. The few cases that do pop up all seem to be tuned cars.

Are there any documented cases of this on a stock vehicle or is this just a rumor?

And how many of them have been tuned, then detuned and sold to a new buyer?

I'm not saying I don't believe that it hasn't happened to a stock car but it is a problem that is almost exclusive to tuned cars.

I'm stock running D3 and doing kick downs every single day + tracking regularly.

you read the poll????
obviously stock you sleep at night knowing it's going to be covered.
but there 6 reported stock 3 on 2018+ cars so I don't know how exclusive it is. also on a 2019 m2c.

What exactly is this "kick down" that everyone is talking about? And also is it more likely to happen in a DCT car? My tuner said the only manual cars he has seen it happen to is on an accidental "money shift"

Always stock vs stock only at the time of spinning are not the same thing.

This almost exclusively a problem of tuned cars.
