I just contacted Jakub (@kubax86) via PM with my VIN, had a few questions about the details. He was extremely responsive, and offers a great option for those of us without CarPlay from the factory. I received the file from him along with instructions which worked seamlessly. I also purchased a WiFi antenna from amazon (was inexpensive and not worth the potential hassle of spotty CarPlay/iPhone connection) and installed at the same time as Jakub's code (which also included full screen and VIM).

Very happy customer

I'd like to get Apple CarPlay in full screen myself, but I need to get my iDrive firmware updated first. I've tried a couple of dealers but had no luck so far, so can anyone who had to get their firmware updated as well tell me which UK dealer was able to do it. Thanks.

I think kubax might be able to do it for you. He was going to do mine before I found a dealer. Process is a bit more involved since you have to wire your car up to an external power source (another car).

If you have the car on lease and not paid outright, what I want to know is, does this affect warranty and how safe is it.

I have heard of scenarios where people do this and end up back at dealers needing to fix or even replace things in car.

This could lead to a concern over warranty if they can detect custom coding.

Using ENET there is always possibility to "Restore to OEM" so you can do it before dealers visit/update.
